Is it ever possible to get a rescue dog of this variety? Any breed recommendations??

There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. Most allergies are caused by dander (skin flakes) rather than fur.

Our experience has been that dd used antihistamines initially (for a month) but is now no longer allergic to Eric who is a poodle shih tzu cross but still reacts to my friends' Yorkshire terrier and lurcher/mongrel neither of whom moult either.

It's definitely possible but no dog is truly hypoallergenic, as others have said.

However, poodles, bichons and other breeds like schnauzers are pretty much non-shedding and therefore help. For example, a shitzu/poodle I know will lick my hand and raise little welts (which disappear by the end of the day but are a bit itchy) whereas the bichon/poodle will do the same and no reaction at all.

You need to contact rescues and perhaps visit a few if you can. Whippets, greyhounds, JRTs, other short-haired breeds might be ok for you/your family. It's usually a question of the person who's allergic becoming de-sensitised to the dog over a period of time, as others have said.

Ye, I have done all the research regarding allergies. I just much prefer the idea of a rescue dog just don' think it feasable as i think id need to spend some time with the dog first.

there are such thing as breed rescues, usually run by the breed club.....i know there is a couple of poodle rescues

Poodles in need are a specialist poodle rescue and thy one times have poodle crosses too.

We have same problem in our family with allergies. We have a tibetan terrier and have in the past had a bearded collie , both fine for ds and I who are allergic.
I spent time with Tibetans before deciding in the breed.
Both breeds have rescue societies.

DH has a strong allergy to longer haired dogs but is absolutely fine with our 4 greyhounds.
