I need to pts the dog on Monday, don't I?

The facts:

Dog is on painkillers and steriods. We have tried most other things so can't change them nor can we increase the dose anymore.

I have a list of 12 things he does when in pain, in the last week he has done 8 of them each day. The current drugs reduced it to 1 thing until a week ago.

He has one walk a day which is less than 10 minutes long. He sleeps almost straight away when we get back.

He has pretty much stopped playing, and sleeps most of the time.

He is having trouble bending into a pooing position.

He doesn't seem unhappy and is still interested in what we are doing.

He is eating ok.

Maybe we should have done it today but it just seems too soon. He is only 5 ffs!

Hello,so very sorry to hear about your beautiful collie.
Has your vet tried antibiotics?.
I'm only asking because after my pup was spade she became very ill with what the vets thought was either meningitis or neurological problems. She was very stiff in her back and neck so much so she couldn't put her head down to eat.She still ate her food when I lifted her bowl but didn't want to go for walks or play ball.
All the vets at our practice couldn't understand it.She didn't respond to pain killers much.Steroids only seemed to take the edge off it.
The vets finally sent her to a neurologist who did a MRI a spinal tap all came back clear.
They finally found out it was a nasty infection.which surprised everyone as they hasn't seen infection that displayed neurological problems like this.
She had two weeks of antibiotics and hasn't looked back.
I will be thinking of you Monday what ever you decide.
You have given your dog a wonderful life and if you do have to pts you know you have given him every chance possible and you are doing it because you love him so much.
Big hugs.

Thank you Lonecat, we have put so much time and effort into this dog and his health. I once chased down every vet I could find at crufts and asked their opinions. It took hours!

Olliecollie, it his highly unlikely to be an infection. His gait is altered and has been since we rehomed him at 11 weeks. He has also never had a temp.

Lonecatwithkitten · 01/09/2014 17:55

Ephedra I have been thinking of you today and hope you are at peace with whatever decision you made.

Ephedra · 01/09/2014 19:19

Thank you.

The dog was pts before 9 this morning, the vet totally agreed with us and said we were making the right decision (it wasn't normal vet).

Last night we broke all the rules, the dog was allowed upstairs (he needed help on the stairs) and on the bed and for dinner last night Dh made him a double cheese burger which the dog loved Grin

After the vets this morning we avoided home and went to my mums (where we witnessed a car crash on the way!) so have only been home an hour or so. It feels weird and the house is strangely quiet.

Oh ephedra, he was a bloody lucky dog :) I'm so sad he's no longer here, it's heart breaking :( x x x

Lovethesea · 01/09/2014 20:07

So sorry for your loss.

I think you did the right thing. He had no affairs to put in order, just life in each moment as it came. Better a day too early than a day too late.

Ephedra · 01/09/2014 20:17

Better a day too early than a day too late

Lovethesea that is why he was pts sleep today. He was going down hill so fast and we wanted him to have more happy times than painful ones. We also didn't want to feel the guilt for leaving him even one day too long.

I well remember your last thread and know how hard you have worked to give him the best.

The pain does get better, as you know, just remember you did the last best thing you could have done for him.

Take careFlowers

Ephedra · 02/09/2014 19:47

Thank you. Dh is on holiday this week (because its my 30th tomorrow) and even though he is here the house feels empty.

My mum rang earlier and I burst into tears because the dog wasn't barking at the phone Sad.

I know we made the right decision, as well as all the things I said in my first post he was also trying to walk on the top of his feet and he kept trying to eat with his tongue out.

He was a happy dog who fill our lives with joy, we will miss him forever.
