I have a beautiful retired grey, she's 6 and an absolute delight.

3 days ago she was struggling to get up, and howling and whining like she was in a lot of pain. She also stopped eating and drinking. We rushed her to the vets where they gave her pain relief and performed various tests and an ultrasound. All came back normal and we were told it was a simple pulled muscle (the pain seemed to be in her abdomen and radiate down her back left leg.)

Yesterday she seemed back to her old bouncy self and was eating/drinking/toileting as normal.

I have just gone to check on her as she took herself off to bed and her entire abdomen is purple and red. It looks horrendous. Sad She is showing no signs of pain or discomfort but she is very quiet. Am awaiting a call back from OOH vets but can anyone reassure/shed light on what on earth this is?

Bleeding problem maybe.

Can you check her gums, are they still pink?

annoyedofnorwich · 14/08/2014 00:13

I can't help I'm afraid, not come across anythjng similar, but I hope she's ok!

Gums are pink, she doesn't seem in any discomfort when I touch her abdomen, OOH vet still hasn't called back yet Sad

No idea but sounds worrying. Any update?

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/08/2014 08:58

How is she this morning :(

Acolyte · 14/08/2014 09:03

If she has pulled a muscle, isn't this the bruising coming out?

Hope it isn't more serious and that she's back on form this morning.

Scuttlebutter · 14/08/2014 09:13

Purple and red will be the bruising. Because the fur is so fine and the skin so thin it always looks horrendous. If everything else is OK, she should be fine. What did the vet say?

CastilianHhhhidalgo · 14/08/2014 09:21

I was also wondering if it might just be bruising related to the pulled muscle.

It can take a few days for bruising to really develop. Me and DH once rushed our old boy to the vets convinced he was dying if something hideous as between his back legs and down his inner thighs turned black pretty much overnight. It turned out that it was just some rather spectacular bruising caused by him leaping onto the bed and managing to land astride the metal bedstead a few days earlier Blush

WienerDiva · 14/08/2014 09:42

I'm inclined to suggest it's bruising. Sight hounds are notoriously wimpy and seen to have a much lower pain threshold than other dogs.

Keep an eye on her gums, you could press them and then time how long it takes for then to go pink again (should be no more than a couple of seconds).

But she sounds bright and happy so that a good thing.

NancyFancyPants · 14/08/2014 11:07

Sorry about the delay was a bit of a stressful night! Vet is pretty happy that it's nothing untoward and it's the bruising coming out, huge sighs of relief here!! She is currently enjoying some pilchards and is happy as Larry Smile

Thankyou for all the advice Thanks Thanks
