It's an ESS. The 'show' or bench-bred varieties are a bit calmer than the field type but they both need at least an hour a day of off-leash running/snuffling, preferably through woods, field or stream. The reward for doing that is a sleepy, affectionate, cuddly, gigantic lap-dog for the remainder of the day
. They are brilliant with children. Cockers usually don't need as much exercise (unless they come from trial-dog lines).
