Walking a dog, on a harness and lead plus collar and lead (can't be off lead ever, added just so it shows the situation)

Loose dog comes running up and won't leave, my dog is trying to launch itself at loose dog and both are getting aggressive. Dog owner nowhere in sight. What do/would you do?
Oh and already shouted for dog owner and tried to walk away from other dog

So... I walk my lurcher in a slip lead quite a bit - its the only lead she can't slip (!) The lead should go from your hand over the top of the far side of the dog, and curl back round the neck with the metal loop on the bottom side closest to you.

If you regularly walk dogs in a harness that might pull, get a harness with a D ring at the front. The Perfect Fit harness has lots of different size options so you could get yourself a harness that would fit most medium to large sized dogs if you wanted to have one with the D ring at the front.

You did completely the right thing putting yourself between the dog and the one you were walking - this would have put you 'in charge' according to the dog you were walking. The thing to watch at the same time is that you try to keep a fairly loose lead (obviously not with lots of slack to allow a lunge) - but a slack lead allows the dog to put themselves out of the way, a tight lead puts their head up in a very aggressive attitude which will affect the way they feel and the other dog will think of them.

You seem to know where the loose dog lives? I would be reporting it to the police and dog warden, I would play up how aggressive it was, how you couldn't get away safely, it is really unacceptable.

I have a very large , very overly over friendly giant dog, who I hasten to add I keep very close and am v careful where he is allowed off lead, if he approaches another dog that is on lead ( I am sure I will get flamed for this), I am always bending over backwards to apologise - and he is friendly.......if he was aggressive....well if he was aggressive he would never be allowed off lead, anyway I can't believe his owner did not care enough to apologise.

I do. I recognised where the house is, checked the house number. It's actually a house that the police are aware of (my old neighbours reported them for drug dealing)

I use a treat bomb. Carry a pocket full of highly appealing cheap dog food, we all know the stuff, lob it at the approaching dog and leg it.

I am loving treat bombing

Hi OP, I walk a reactive German Shepherd and I know how difficult it is. I have to keep him away from other dogs, except for the soppy long haired Dachshund he lives with. Like the husky, he's wonderful most of the time but when out I have to take precautions. I've taught him to sit and stay if we're passing any houses with yappy/aggressive sounding dogs. He's not permitted to move until he calms down. Though your situation was more difficult and, thankfully I haven't had the face to face situation yet. [worried] I do carry a pet corrector spray though and have had to use it for another dog I was sitting. The owner 'forgot' to mention that he was dog aggressive Hmm Angry We met a passed a beautiful little poodle on the other side of the road and I swear 'my' dog would have killed it if I wasn't able to hold it. The spray makes a sharp hissing sound and it distracts the dog. In the few days it was with me it learnt that every time it reacted aggressively to other dogs it would hear this loud hiss. The aggression is the dogs 'reward' and the hiss takes away the reward iykwim. Eventually it stopped doing it. Unfortunately it sound reverted to the unwanted behaviour when it went home. Sad

I always carry it now in case of meeting aggressive dogs. You can also carry a pop up umbrella, though get your dog used to it as you don't want to scare it. The idea is to pop it open in the direction of the oncoming dog. This should either scare it away or distract it long enough for you to get away.

Stay he reverted back because the corrector spray suppressed the behaviour, he still felt the same about other dogs but was too scared of the spray to show it Sad
