Neighbours complained to landlord re barking

I have no idea what to do. We have lived here for 2.6 years and neighbours have never said anything to us about the dogs. Anyway on Saturday landlord rings and asks if she can come round and speak to me.

When she arrives she looks upset, and says she has some bad news. One of the neighbours has been complaining to the agent that the dog has been barking all day long. We have 2 dogs and have never had complaints before, I work out of the home during school hours, but often h or ds1 (17) are home earlier and ds1 is currently only at work 2 days a week.

We live in a semi detached house in quiet residential crescent, its not a through road to anywhere and very little traffic. apparently they believe it to be the Labrador that barks and not the terrier as its a deep loud bark not a yap. In the evening you can hear lots of dogs in the neighbourhood, in their gardens and I have a few times mistakenly old the Labrador to stop barking to realise its not him, he's lying indoors in his basket.

Basically the landlord has given us 4 weeks to sort the problem or the dogs will have to leave! Or at least the Labrador will.

They are both walked for at least an hour before I leave for work, and then walked again when I get home and then h or ds1 take them for a walk before bed. They are left with toys and the tv on very low. We are now experimenting with keeping the blinds closed so that he can't see birds/cats/people walking past. The terrier can't see above the window sill anyway.

What else can we do?

Moving is not an option, we can't afford to, rents have gone up considerably and after a run of landlords selling up on us we feel as secure as you can do in a private rent and the landlord is lovely, carries out repairs quickly and generally just leaves us to it. Also as the agent won't say who has made the complaint, I can't really go knocking on the neighbours doors without looking like im angling for an argument.

Have you told the owners (nicely of course)?

sonlypuppyfat · 31/07/2014 18:44

I can't tell for sure which house it's coming from. It's out all night crying so I'm not so sure that they care.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 31/07/2014 18:44

I'd say speak to the owners as well. They may not be aware, they may not realise it's annoying to other people or they may just not care. But is much rather someone come and speak to me than call the letting agents/landlord/council.

We've got guinea pigs and rabbits in hutches on our covered patio lets hope they don't start complaining about the squeaking of the piggies. I clean them out at least three times a week to make sure no smells to bother them and sweep up twice daily to clear the sawdust they kick up. Especially the bunnies at the moment I think the sawdust makes it to hot for them so they kick it out of the hutch.

My friend has 2 dogs and she is oblivious to how much irritating noise they constantly make.

It doesn't have to be all day long, just a few, loud, barking sessions per day is enough to be a nuisance.

I have a very quiet dog so would hate to be her neighbour. People have very different tolerance to noise and I think owners of lovely dogs that bark loudly are in complete denial how completely unacceptable and iritating it is to be living next door to dogs like that.

If I were in your position I would pop next door, tell them you are worried your dogs might be causing a nuisance by barking and ask them for their honest opinion if they are.

Tell them you have received a complaint about the dogs and you want to improve the situation rather than move out.

Being in denial and blaming other dogs is not going to help your cause at this stage.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 31/07/2014 19:11

I'm not in denial. Just surprised that the first anyone would say anything to would be the agent/ll?

We do say hello and talk about the dc etc. not long after we moved in I did make a point of saying if ever the dc or the dogs or even h&i were too loud or the tv was too loud etc then to just knock and say. They did warn us that the baby was teething a few months ago and that he was crying a lot. I said then I'd not heard him they probably got more noise from us and if they did to let us know. They said then that never heard us. So you can see why this has been a bit of a shock assuming it is them.

A guinea pig squeaking is a lovely noise, very cute.

GothMummy · 31/07/2014 21:00

In that case I would guess its not your attached neighbours then? If they are friendly could you pop round, smiling brightly, and ask for their assistance in helping you work out if your dog is barking? Except dont act like you think its them that reported you.

A dog near us is tied up in its garden in the evenings and howls all evening, breaks my heart. I know the owners know because they periodically shout at it to shut up!!

OP, how old is the lab? If it does turn out to be him doing the barking, and he's quite old, consider the onset of a bit of senility as a possible cause for him randomly barking at nothing (and consult your vet if so - this problem can be helped).

noddingoff · 31/07/2014 21:49

Although on second reading of your original post, I'm guessing that if he's fit to walk for an hour a couple of times a day, he's probably not all that decrepit!

GothMummy · 31/07/2014 22:14

That was my first thought, nodding off, though we did have an old spaniel who could still walk for miles but had some kind of doggy dementia and would bark at nothing in a corner. She was about 15 though...

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 01/08/2014 10:01

nodding hes 6 so not too old. He is fit and healthy, the only problem we have is that he was attacked by another dog coming up to 2 years ago now and so he barks at other dogs and warns them off when out for walks.

He's been fine this morning, they didn't bark when let out for morning wee's. NO issues on the walk, hes come home from his walk and gone straight back to sleep in his basket.

They are both rescue dogs but got as young puppies (12 weeks ish) that had been in the rescue since just after birth. The terrier is about 6-9 months older than the Lab. We got her first then decided would be nice to have a friend for her to keep each other company when we were out of the house.

Just popped home for lunch as had a meeting not too far from home and the recorder hasn't recorded anything.

Hoping to 'bump' into both sets of neighbours this weekend so that I can casually ask if they have heard the dog and if hes being annoying or not.

Fingers crossed its just a storm in a tea cup and you hear no more about it!

Thank you.
