How hot is too hot to walk the dog?

Is there a set temperature?

Have a 3 yr old lab who needs a lot of walking. Middle of day is best time for me but days like today I do an evening walk instead. Just wondered what others did?

Thanks in advance Smile

Struggling with my dog today (18 month old lab x collie), took him out early this morning, played ball in the field which seemed to tire him out, he has been pacing up and down all day crying as he wants another walk. It's close to 30 outside and way too hot to take him out, he has now plonked himself down in the sun ( stupid dog ), I will take him out again early evening when it starts to cool down.

Any ideas how I can keep him amused in the heat? I keep freezing kongs and bones but this gives him a dodgy tummy ( he usually only has dry food but I have been putting wet food into the kongs ). He's getting very frustrated not having a walk in the middle of the day.

Murph is currently playing a game of 'how many toys can I take into the paddling pool', which wouldn't be so bad if he din't keep bringing them back in and dropping the dripping articles in my lap Hmm

I give Murphy a cold carrot to munch on, I've also been adding a handful of frozen peas into his dry food (he loves frozen peas). Also been putting ice into his water dish to keep it chilled.

Marne - try mixing his normal dry food with a little natural yoghurt or peanut butter, stuffing into the kong and freezing - hopefully this should be better for his tummy. Remember to take the quantity out of his normal fee amount though.

Just come back from a middle of the day walk - however I only walk in the woods on a day like today, and the woods are very shady and feel a good 5 degrees (or more) cooler than in the sun

marne Soak his normal kibble in either water or low salt stock, wait until it softens, jam it in the kong and freeze that.

HavantGuard · 23/07/2014 15:42

Before 8am and after 8pm for walks at the moment. I go by the met office website and try to make sure they're walked when it's under 20 as one of mine overheats easily.

HavantGuard · 23/07/2014 15:44

Obviously it's hotter than that in the evening but I refuse to walk them in the dark. There are bats around here. Lots of bats

Thank you, will try mixing his food with water or yoghurt and cram it in the kong.

We take SpringyThing to the loch for a swim with minimal walking. She'll happily swim so far out that you have to squint to tell the difference between her head and the ducks she is chasing but will never catch (she is thick as mince and hasn't realised that they will always fly away before she gets to them). We also pour cold water on her in the garden.

SpicyPear · 23/07/2014 22:37

Catypillar I have a dog here desperate to live with you near the loch for the duration of the hot weather! Sounds brilliant.

I tend to do a barefoot test too. It's quite sheltered if we can get to the woods for a good sniff.

My mad dog has now missed 2 walks because of the heat. Our local lake has banned dogs swimming because of poisoning where the water is so stagnant.
I play with her in the evenings and she loves a good water fight. I feel for her as she just collapses on the wood flooring if she goes out in the sun. As soon as its cooler here I will give her a lovely walk.

I took my dog for a walk at 8pm last night. Where I had intended to park was crammed so I went to the other car park - that was crammed too (must have been some sort of event) then I went to a completely different park with a stream - parking was no problem. However there were picnickers and she found a supply of sausages and we ended up coming home after very little walk adn too many sausages.

Took our black lab for a walk yesterday at 10am and only lasted 1/2 hour, ddog and I were both cooked!

Walked after 9pm last night and got up early this morning at walked at 07:30am until 9am and both walks much much better. Ddog even managed to have a run about with a weimaraner this morning and is now spark out on the couch.

We've been walking in the woods rather than across fields but we do early morning and evening and then a late stroll around the block. Eric spends most of the day in the coolest spot in the house and if he goes in the garden he goes in the den under the slide to stay in the shade. He loves ice cubes in his water and to chase around the kitchen floor and I make him lollies by freezing a bit of his kibble in water in yoghurt pots.
