Sorry if this seems like a stupid question.

Patch is a staffy x ?pointy of some variety.

Usually extremely energetic, bouncy, loves people. Usually he'll eat anything he sees and clears his food very quickly.

The night before last he was sick in the early hours. I'd say he vomited his whole dinner which had been given at around 6 pm.

Yesterday he seemed OK, eating and drinking, in and out of the house. But by last night he seemed a bit subdued. DH and I had a curry and normally he'd be right beside us in hope of us dropping some. Instead, he completely ignored it.

Last night he again vomited his whole dinner in the early hours. This morning he seems subdued. Didn't make a fuss when the children came into my bedroom. My father came in briefly to see him and although he trotted around a bit and jumped a couple of times, he usually goes dotty and he was noticeably calmer. Dad threw a toy for him and although he did trot off to get it, he didn't run and pounce like normal. He hasn't eaten his breakfast (Burns potato and pork).

He seems to be weeing and he's had a poo. The only other thing is that earlier he seemed as if he was nibbling something little in his mouth and his skin on his head was visibly jeering. I thought he was twitching when he was under my covers but I couldn't see if it was just dreamy jerks or something else.

DH has just come home and he hasn't even bothered to get up.

I was just coming to say 'blockage!' but got to the end of the thread and see your poorly dog is already at the vet.

Some dogs are particularly prone to eating unsuitable things and staffies are deffo in that category.

Hope he is ok.

moosemama · 22/07/2014 16:07

Poor lad. Sad

I'll be keeping everything crossed for him.

lougle · 22/07/2014 16:12

Hmmm. I've just phoned for an update:

They had iv fluids in, operated and found.... Nothing.

OP posts:
Deverethemuzzler · 22/07/2014 16:15

I am not surprised they did it though. Its such a common thing and your dog was exhibiting the symptoms and if they don't operate quickly its fatal.

moosemama · 22/07/2014 16:20

They must have felt they had no choice but to go ahead really quickly and as Deverethemuzzler said he was exhibiting all the signs.

What are they thinking now?

SpicyPear · 22/07/2014 16:24

Oh poor Patch! Do they have any ideas on what it is?

lougle · 22/07/2014 17:26

They've said that they will keep him in and treat him as a dog with gastric problems so they're keeping him overnight and probably tomorrow. I can call in the morning.

Poor Patch.

Am glad you took him in.

Owllady · 22/07/2014 19:02

My dog was similar to this with gastritis
I hope he's better soon x

MitchellMummy · 22/07/2014 19:20

Poor Patch. My dog was seriously ill with gastric problems last year - stayed at the vet for two nights on IV drip. But she came out fighting fit, so I'm hoping the same will happen to Patch. We think ours ate part of a dead bird... but can't be sure.

Deverethemuzzler · 22/07/2014 21:26

My little dog had acute pancreatitis and was v.poorly like patch.

It was my fault. Someone recommended a dog food and I fed it to him. It was SO high in fat he put on loads of weight and got very sick.

It was bloody expensive too.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 22/07/2014 21:47

Paws crossed here. Smile

lougle · 22/07/2014 21:54

Oh that's horrible, Mrs D.

Patch is on Burns which is very expensive, but he's really lean on it. He has the potato and pork because he's intolerant to chicken in dog food (although oddly, not intolerant to raw chicken).

How is Patch this morning?

lougle · 23/07/2014 15:43

He's home Smile. He's looking very sorry for himself but he's apparently eating and drinking.

BellaVita · 23/07/2014 15:51

Yay for Patch coming home. Lots of tlc...

WeAllHaveWings · 23/07/2014 16:15

Glad to hear Patch is home. Our lab was in for a couple of days about 6 weeks ago, same sort of thing, iv fluids, anti-b's, x-rays and they found nothing, thankfully never got as far as operating. Had to assume it must have been something he ate - toad, dead animal, plants, he eats everything he finds!

If you are ever looking for a change in dog food Millies Wolfheart has several recipes and they are all chicken and grain free. Probably around the same price as burns, but usually feed slightly less.

furrlinedsheepskinjacket · 23/07/2014 16:30

phewwwwww just rtft
I always get mine to the vets as soon as I notice anything - its never really been a waste of time

mistlethrush · 23/07/2014 16:36

Phew, glad he's home. I hope he makes a speedy recovery and is soon annoying you with all his bouncing again.

ExitPursuedByAKoalaBear · 23/07/2014 16:43

What was it?

Glad he is home and eating.

lougle · 23/07/2014 17:00

Thanks! Apparently they observed that his gastric system was all very inflamed but say it's just a tiny bug! He's got diarrhoea now but they say as long as he isn't sick they aren't worried.

OP posts:
ExitPursuedByAKoalaBear · 23/07/2014 17:06

Obviously he is a very sensitive soul!

SpicyPear · 23/07/2014 17:52

Bless him - maybe the heat has meant he reacted a bit worse than usual. So easy to dehydrate.
