Hi all, I couldn't find the last puppy mummies thread so thought I'd create a new one!

First time puppy owner and getting my yellow lab pup on the weekend! I'm sure I'm mad!! Very nervous and excited at the same time!

Anyone else collecting their new puppies in the next week or so?

Ok, I know I am resurrecting an old thread but I am bringing home a SBT pup next week (she will be 8 weeks). I am sooooo excited.

Need a name though, which is going to be hard to think of I am sure.

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 23/08/2014 18:38

SBT????

financialwizard · 23/08/2014 20:26

Staffordshire Bull Terrier. So excited to welcome her to her new home.

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 24/08/2014 06:51

Exciting and daunting ... a bit like a new baby. Ours slept in our room in a crate the first night (no crying, but I did have to put her out for a pee at 3 am) and I kept checking if she was breathing.
11 weeks old now and full of character (!), housetraining not going so well due to many other calls on my attention, but everyone loves her, esp DH, who was not sure about the project to start with.
Name changed several times and present name is not my choice, but has to stay as she now knows it.
Any pictures yet?? We visited ours several times before collecting her.

Hi all may I join in the fun! Picked up our new puppy on Friday, 8 week old Golden retriever. We already have a 4 year old golden, and sadly lost his half brother in February.decison to get another dog was mainly companionship for him.... At the moment he is VERY unimpressed!

New pup is called Brodie, ( our darling boy was called Indy after Indiana Jones and Marcus Brodie was his friend .)
He has been a little star so far done all his toileting in the garden, cries to go out, and already knows his name.We are all very smitten... Will post some pics later. Good luck to everyone else.

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 24/08/2014 16:49

Ours was quite housetrained at the beginning ... maybe goldens are more intelligent (or we have broken her).
Our old dog (12) was unimpressed to start with, but is slowly coming round after 3 weeks ... puppy can sneak up onto sofa to cuddle up with old dog when she is asleep and the odd half-hearted pat with her paws ... I am hopeful.

Know what you mean LBDSP

No pictures yet, and going back tomorrow but we have had a lot of family commitment this weekend so haven't had the chance yet (eldest having to be taken to Dad's 3 hours away that kind of thing).

Really looking forward to at least getting the first night over because that is what I am dreading the most!

Khalessi · 24/08/2014 19:04

Here is my new puppy, Gizmo. She's a Poochon, a toy poodle x bichon frise and I just luffs her :)

That is so cute and so tiny! How old is she??
First night was really not too bad, FW; only up once. Thereafter I just ignored some rather feeble whining until about 5 am (when I get up anyway). Wee on the lawn, small snack in her crate, cover it with a blanket and off to take old dog for a walk and washing up etc until she has breakfast at about 7 am.

GooseEnthusiast · 24/08/2014 20:22

Oooh, can I join? I have a 2 year old German Shepherd and picked up our OES pup last Saturday (she is now 11 weeks old) they are getting on very well together (It's none stop playtime here) and she seems to be setling in well so far.

Gizmo definitely suit their name! How cute.

LBDSP the breeder says she is going through the night now so hopefully when she is used to us being her new family she will do so.

Khalessi · 25/08/2014 06:14

Gizmo is 8 weeks. First jab due this week :( so then she can start using our garden for her toiletting. At the mo though she seems to be taking well to newspaper!

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 25/08/2014 06:54

I thought that they could go out into your garden from the beginning and also visit people with no dogs/vaccinated dogs. That was the advice from my vet. We spent the summer holidays taking puppy everywhere, just carrying her when not in a totally safe space (like friends' gardens).

financialwizard · 25/08/2014 07:06

I thought that too.

Khalessi · 25/08/2014 08:50

Vet suggested having first vaccination as we live in a rural area and may have foxes etc in garden.

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 25/08/2014 09:59

Our vet said that dogs can't won't anything from foxes or badgers ... foxes very very rarely have parvo as it is passed by contact and foxes are generally solitary, therefore incidence in fox population low ... but to avoid fields where cows may have been, as parvo can be carried in cow urine ...
Whatever ... it is a very short time in your life with your puppy.

Tootyfilou · 25/08/2014 10:23

Big dog ( aww he was our baby until Friday ) growled quite nastily at pup yesterday evening. He had jumped up in his face and surprised him. Pup terrified and Ds very upset. Baby steps, Big dog has been v good apart from that.
Pup Not impressed with rain this morning... Told him that as this is Wales he bet to get used to it!
Have any of you changed over from breeders food? We were given a months supply of Beta puppy, but I want to feed Millie's Wolfheart as that's what we use for big dog and I think it's a much better food. I have been putting a few prices in with the Beta kibble and will gradually increase the amount.

Luxaroma · 25/08/2014 10:42

We have changed from breeder's food, more quickly that I'd planned because pup was unimpressed with kibble and losing weight, so we swapped to raw and thankfully pup loved it and poos are now firm!

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 25/08/2014 11:32

We changed, by accident (as are most of my child/dog rearing decisions) as puppy kept stealing big dog's food. No evidence at all of upset digestion, firm poos, vet happy she is growing well.
According to vet, big dog must put puppy in its place ... our big dog suddenly got eczema as she was so stressed at being bullied by puppy!

Tootyfilou · 25/08/2014 15:48

What is your other dog LBDSP ? Has she settled down now?

Poor big dog will not even look at him today, I took him for a lovely long walk as DH has walked him since pup arrived, and I wanted to give him some one to one. I have done this 3 times now ( old dog new pup ) and I know it will work out ok, but had forgotten how stressful it can be!

Still can't post photos sorry, will try soon. Thanks for info on food will introduce more of Millie's in next meal...he seems to be permenently ravenous.

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 25/08/2014 19:48

Big dog is a border collie x huntaway ... she is 12, so before the craze for inventing designer names and prices. Nowadays she'd be called a Borderway or a Collieway probably. A very gentle, submissive dog, who is very much my dog.
New puppy is very assertive ...
I don't know if you have to divide your attention fairly between the two ... I was religiously doing this, then I thought, they are dogs; they may well understand things completely differently. But I still take Big dog for a walk on her own every morning.

Tootyfilou · 25/08/2014 22:04

When we had our first second dog IYSWIM, our older dog was 10 years old, I remember being on my own with the new pup ( was Indy ) and old dog as rest of family went out and getting really really upset because Indy would not leave old dogs ears alone and was biting him all the time.

They became really good friends after a few weeks, and old dog lived another 5 years, and I feel as though having Indy gave him a new lease of life. Hope you have a similar happy experience... I am sure you will.

Big dog took Indys death really hard and obviously misses him terribly. They were inseparable , I just hope we have not caused him further trauma by getting introducing an unwanted puppy! It's a psychological nightmare!

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 26/08/2014 06:59

Tootyfilou, from what you say, it was probably the best thing you could have done.
Goose, they are gorgeous ... but you are going to have some very big dogs about! I hope you have a lot of room; we seem to be constantly falling over our animals and our house is not tiny. You should have some great walks; how lucky ...

GooseEnthusiast · 26/08/2014 21:32

LaBelle - thank you, I think they're gorgeous too but then, I am biased :)

We switched quite quickly from breeders food - puppy didn't like it very much and wasn't really eating, so we just switched in an attempt to encourage her to eat. She loves her new food and is eating well now.

Resident dog and pup are getting on very well still to the point that they don't like being separated. We took Meike (the big dog) for a walk on her own yesterday and Shelby (pup) howled the whole time I was gone!

Picking up my baby girl tomorrow Grin ... so excited.
