There was absolutely nothing I could do. It was on a 40mph road and it just jumped out in front of me. I tried my best to help it but it's died. I feel absolutely terrible. I've just about managed to calm myself down enough to write this and call the police who are on their way.

It isn't collared so I imagine the police are going to have to take it to a vet to check for a chip. Tried knocking on what properties I have and no luck.

Oh you poor poor thing!

Good thing you're sitting waiting for the police, I'm sure you must be all shakey.

WorkingBling · 14/07/2014 15:05

Oh you poor thing. That's awful. I hit a dog many years ago. It was awful. And I found the owner but she was so uncaring - obviously worried I was going to sue her for the fact that her dog had potentially damaged my car. When you can, go somewhere to calm down. LOts of sweet milky tea - you've had a shock.

Secret hugs.

SnakeyMcBadass · 14/07/2014 15:07

Awful for you. Be kind to yourself.

AlpacaLypse · 14/07/2014 15:12

Also can I just say thank you for waiting and calling the police?

The driver of the car that killed my mum's dog didn't do so, and it was many hours before one of our neighbours saw his body lying beside the road. By that time she'd got the entire family out searching increasingly frantically.

hmc · 14/07/2014 15:13

How upsetting for you. Please remember it just wasn't your fault - you couldn't have predicted or prevented it Thanks

whatwoulddexterdo · 14/07/2014 16:10

So sorry this has happened to you, but it really wasn't your fault. Unfortunately terrible accidents do happen.
You did the right thing by calling the police and waiting with the dog. I suspect many would have driven off.

ReadyisKnitting · 14/07/2014 16:14

So sorry this has happened. Thank you for waiting, and for reporting it. The person who knocked over my delinquent didn't stand a chance, but it would have been good to say that too them. (She was very lucky, dislocated elbow and cuts)

Hot sweet tea, and Thanks for being so caring

So sorry for you. NOT your fault at all, but can understand how you must feel. If you can take a photo of the dog then if the vet can't find a microchip you could put him/her on the Doglost site (in the found section). Then if someone is missing their dog at least they will have closure. Whilst most people have their dogs ID'd it's surprising how many don't.

Aked · 14/07/2014 16:23

Poor you, and poor dog:( What a horrible thing to have happened. Definitely tea, it makes most things a little bit better.

Branleuse · 14/07/2014 16:23

:( you poor thing. You must be ao shaken up. Thank goodness he didnt make you actually crash. It could have been so much worse and it was probably your careband skill that meant he was the only casualty.
please be kind to yourself xx

How badly is your car damaged?

VanGogh · 14/07/2014 16:28

Oh honey. You poor poor thing. Be kind to yourself. It wasn't your fault.

Misspilly88 · 14/07/2014 16:30

Well done for staying, my dog got killed by a car which didn't stop. Although I'd probably still have been heartbroken it would have meant a lot if someone like you had stopped and bothered to try and contact the police/owners.

The Police will not routinely scan the dog for a chip so if you could take the dog yourself to the vet to ensure that it is scanned. That would be a great comfort to the owners if they are out looking for it.

Also report to dog lost yourself as noone else will do it.

dog lost

mulberrylover · 14/07/2014 19:28

Thanks everyone.

The owner came out a minute or two after I posted this- a young girl who was on her own- parents on holiday, boyfriend at work and no other family in the area so I stayed with her for an hour or so to make sure she was OK because as I'm sure you can all imagine she was much more shaken up than I am. Poor thing was only a pup.

Everyone give your dogs that extra cuddle tonight.

Lots of Wine for me.

Flowers for her and for you.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 14/07/2014 22:03

Thanks mulberry. You did a good thing in a bad situation. I'm sure many wouldn't. Hope you and the puppy owner are okay.

Branleuse · 15/07/2014 17:44
