Raw food from the supeemarket

Hi I am dabbling in raw feeding. I know I should go completely raw but our regular travelling means I need to make sure Ddog still eats dry food.

At the moment her diet is Burns original for breakfast then over a week she has a lambs heart, two chicken wings some pigs liver a tin of sardines and an egg. Also so has fisk skins and carrots and apple cores as treats.

What other raw meats could I feed which I can get at the supermarket which are cheap. I was thinking pork ribs but dont know if the bone would be too tough. Or Oxtail maybe? Any ideas gratefully received.

Pork ribs are great. Oxtail is ok but the bone is very hard and in the supermarket the pieces tend to be small choking risk discs. It is best in a large piece.

Morrisons is good for bones. They sell them cheaply as stock bones and they are nice and meaty. Lamb ribs are good too.

Beware feeding too much bone though. The diet should be 10/10/80 bone/offal/meat. Have you seen the raw guide posted here this week?

youbethemummylion · 12/07/2014 20:58

Thanks invisibleman I will have a trip to Morrisons. I will have a look at the raw feeding guide as well. I should have mentioned she is a Bichon so only little so I dont think she can handle the tougher bones.

Mine is a Border Terrier so only 8kg and can manage ribs and lamb and pork spine. I promise they all designed to do the same job and I have seen pics of chi's eating ribs etc Smile

Ok I shall let her channel her inner wolf :-)

I buy wings, ribs and offal from the supermarket ad agree morrisons is a great source of raw food.

Our local butcher sells ground chicken mince with bone so worth trying to source locally.

I also give Ddog, 46k rottweiller veg, eggs, fish and coconut oil.

Sh shits like a rabbit, no wind ever and her coat and teeth are shiny and clean, it's the best decision I ever made for her.

TooOldForGlitter · 12/07/2014 21:58

Our local Morrison's is selling two lamb bones for about 60p at the moment. Mine took 45 minutes last night to eat one and loved it. Do bear in mind my local Mozzas slap children though Grin

Are pork bones OK? I read a parasite story somewhere and am now wobbly about pork.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 12/07/2014 22:11

Pork is fine as long as british and frozen for 2 weeks. Not all dogs get on with it though so try a small amount first to make sure they digest it okay. It is a fave here though.

TooOldForGlitter · 12/07/2014 22:13

Ah good, thank you. I passed up some bloody porky bargains today then!

GetYourFingersOutOfThere · 12/07/2014 22:21

Supermarket and British bought pork doesn't need to be frozen does it?

I've been feeding for over a year and always understood that fresh supermarket human consumable doesn't need to be frozen, road kill does though.

CaptChaos · 12/07/2014 22:29

You could maybe get a whole chicken, cut it into 4 and serve with livers and an apple? Or whatever is an appropriate serving for your dog.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 12/07/2014 22:33

I have been told that pork should be frozen due to a very minimal parasite risk. But being absolutely honest I have fed it fresh let alone frozen for 2 weeks. I figure it can't be worse than some of the shite (literally sometimes!) he tries to eat out and about!

TooOldForGlitter · 12/07/2014 22:48

Is there any benefit to feeding fruit? Genuine question not trying to be shitty!

GetYourFingersOutOfThere · 12/07/2014 22:59

I give it as a treat and not part off her diet, she loves kewi and strawberry and always begs for apple and pear core.

TooOldForGlitter · 12/07/2014 23:18

I struggle to share strawberries with the kids....apples it is then!

fanoftheinvisibleman · 12/07/2014 23:20

I am in the camp of fruit and veg having no value to add but no harm either so again, I use it as a treat sometimes. He does love a raw carrot.

GetYourFingersOutOfThere · 12/07/2014 23:31

My Ddog diet is mainly the 80 10 10 diet with fruit and veg thrown in, today was hot and she spent hours with a frozen marrow bone and a frozen watermelon.

youbethemummylion · 13/07/2014 05:47

The carrot and apple in Ddogs diet are there just as occasional treats I wouldnt feed them too much because of the sugar content. Also with the apple she only gets the core when the kids have eaten the apple so not much actual apple flesh left iyswim.

I know someone doing a course on dog nutrition and she's learnt that dogs can't digest pork properly so they shouldn't have it. No idea if this is true though so I'd research it.

WeAllHaveWings · 13/07/2014 21:42

Our ddog is mainly fed an excellent quality kibble (as I am too lazy for a completely raw diet), but always interested in giving him occasional raw meat or dog friendly treats too. I noticed a lot a people saying apple cores here, I recently read this:

Apples are wonderful crunchy treats for your dog. Apples with the skin on are full of plant chemicals (phytonutrients) that are thought to be protective against some types of cancer in humans. They are a source of vitamins A and C and fibre. Apple seeds, however, contain cyanide so your dog should not be allowed to eat the core. Though the effects of a few apple seeds will likely not harm your dog, the deleterious effects can accumulate over time if allowed to eat apple seeds regularly.
