Last night dd was playing with Eric on the back garden. Football and going up and down the slide. I heard him yelp and they both came in. Dd wasn't sure what he'd done but she may have caught him underfoot.
Around eleven o' clock Eric's leg was obviously hurting him as he was limping, crying and guarding it. We settled him down for the night and he has been fine overnight.
This morning he is walking without a noticeable limp and doesn't seem in pain although he is jumping down from the sofa gingerly.I've felt up and down his leg and looked at his paw and he hasn't objected at all whereas last night he wouldn't let me near it.
Vet opens at 9 o' clock and I'll phone for advice but if they ask whether I think he needs to be seen what should I say?
Had it been one of the dc's I wouldn't take them to A&E or GP if they presented the same this morning if that's anything to go by.

It can't hurt to get him seen. Ours are drama llamas when it comes to injury, but if they weren't walking on it within an hour of a knock I'd be concerned.

VivaLeBeaver · 28/06/2014 07:31

I wouldn't take him.

I'm maybe being harsh but I used to race my dog to the vet every time for stuff like this. Would cost around £60 as vet would give an anti inflammatory injection and painkillers.

I don't go to the dr for twisting something. He's not limping now.

ClaimedByMe · 28/06/2014 07:36

I would take him this morning when the vet is open and you won't get an out of hours charge, our vet is open Saturday morning as normal but anything after 1pm you get an £80 charge if you need to been, better safe than sorry!

Lonecatwithkitten · 28/06/2014 07:36

If you would take your toddler in these circumstances you should take your pet.

MitchellMummy · 28/06/2014 07:42

Always tricky on a Friday or Saturday when you know the vet will be closed (therefore emergency charges for a day or two). Hope he's better soon.

I'll probably nip him down there I think even though he seems fine this morning, it's so much more difficult with dogs though isn't it because they can't tell you if it's still hurting. £60 for peace of mind doesn't seem too bad really as I've been awake most of the night listening out for him and I'd like to know whether he needs to rest up or if he can still go out for a walk if he wants to. Thanks all Flowers

Personally I wouldn't, but I have running dogs who injure themselves constantly, have HAD to take them twice in the last fortnight, once for a badly injured bleeding toe (vets the same day), and once for a bad limp that didn't resolve in 48 hours (no swelling, no flinching on manipulation, vet had no idea what was wrong, anti-inflammatories given). If I took them for every small injury we would ask have to starve Grin

Ime, if it were bad, it would be worse this morning when he has slept and if stiffer, plus I would expect noticeable swelling. I would watch and wait until Monday.

Up to you, go to vet if you want reassurance and you're happy to pay for it, but I don't see the point if he's walking, behaving normally, eating etc. There wouldn't be anything for the vet to see.

SnakeyMcBadass · 28/06/2014 11:26

Same here Gobblers. The spaniel regularly cuts himself and often recalls dripping blood from his tongue or ears. I now have a first aid kit labelled with his name. It's easier.

insanityscatching · 28/06/2014 11:54

Well I phoned at 9am for reassurance and we decided he'd be fine not to be seen but an hour later he was squealing again and so we nipped down to the vets. A strain or a sprain is the diagnosis and a painkilling injection and some syrup for the next couple of days. £40 but I feel reassured and Eric's noticeably happier having had pain relief.

Glad you're feeling better - and that Eric's continuing to improve. Keep us posted.
