Anal glands? <boak>

Is there any way of clearing them without the rubber glove treatment? My dog smells a bit fishy and I'm thinking it may be his anal glands, last time he had them seen too ( as a pup ) he exploded in my car on the way home so I'm not keen on taking him ( as I have a nice new car ), is there something I can feed him that will help clear them or do i really need to take him to the vets?

You can learn to do it yourself ask your vet.

Helpys · 27/06/2014 16:50

Vets.
But you can also add a supplement to his diet that reduced the likelihood of them recurring -silica?
Any chance of walking to the vets, and more importantly home again?

CatnipTea · 27/06/2014 17:05

If he's not a huge dog you could put him in a crate in the car. Sorry, not helpful if you haven't got a crate.
You can prevent it happening again by making sure poos are v firm, so the anal gland gets squeezed every time they go. Ideally raw feeding but I know it's not for everyone.

I taught myself to do my dogs! It's grim but saves on vets fees and hassle. I do the external version!!

He is a huge dog Sad, vets is about 5 miles away, I could take him in dh's car and maybe take him for a walk as soon as we come out of the vets incase of any explosion. I don't fancy learning to do it myself, last time I was nearly sick when he had it done.

His poops are of a reasonable consistency but he does suffer with colitis, we have found a food that makes his poos solid and he has been on this food for quite a while now so no really soft poo's.

My jack russell has this problem. We discussed it last time we were at the vets, vet suggested changing food to chappie & adding a small amount of dry whetabix to her food. It seems to have really helped.

You will need to get them emptied tho Confused

Banannaballs · 29/06/2014 23:12

Oh golly, have this problem too with our collie/retriever cross.Once you are getting the awful fishy smell it means they are emptying which is good,(if not gross, I know). I have tried and failed to do it myself by following youtube tutorials but you may have more luckSmile.
So as long as they are emptying there is no problem really.
Our mutt emptied hers yesterday on dds shoe{really horrible Shock!)

MarcoPoloCX · 30/06/2014 11:09

Large wet wipes and give it a squeeze and a push. Job done!!!!

marne2 · 30/06/2014 11:35

Bananas, he is a colliexlab so similar to your dog, I havn't smelt the fishy smell for a day or 2 so does that mean he has cleared them? He seems to have stopped sniffing and licking his own bottom.

I think it means yes they are empty for the time being...they don't half fill up quick thoughGrin. Our vet said as long as you are getting the awful pong its ok...the problem arises when they cant empty them and keep trying to lick them, drag their butts on the ground etc.
So it sounds like you are ok for a while.Smile

, luckily he wasn't dragging his bum across the floor! does seem like he has cleared it.
