Has anyone any views on a poodle whippet cross?

I am looking for a calm, gentle, trainable puppy to bring up with children and small pets. At present have a lovely border collie cross who is getting old Sad. I have the above puppies advertised .. what do you think?
(Obviously I know puppies don't start calm .... I had a border collie puppy!)

Loved the idea of these dogs ... Too worried about possible eating of guinea pigs and rabbit though :(

lol mine wouldn't eat any small furries if he knew they were "his". If you already have them then the dog will grow up with them and won't think to chase them as long as you train him well. I wouldn't ever pay hundreds of pounds for a cross breed though. There are loads in rescue centres needing a home, and if I want to pay alot for a dog it will be because I want to have a good idea of how they will turn out.

pumpkins , I disagree ,my terrier mix is very well trained and he would have happily eaten our very large and aggressive rabbit , he spent the first 2 years trying to liberate him whenever he was in his cage ! We finally got to the stage where I could bring the rabbit in without the dog trying to grab him last year ( just before the rabbit died of old age) .

We have just bought ... a cockerpoo Blush ... I am NEVER going to call it that ... Turns out that DH had always dreamt of having a spaniel, having had one as a boy, and I know that DD wanted a poodle, so really it was obvious .. apart from the fact that I really really wanted the woodle. But I chose our last dog 12 years ago (long before xbreeds had designer names and prices).
Now I am going to start a thread where people are only allowed to tell me good things about spaniel/poodle crosses and no-one is allowed to sneer at designer crosses. (But they will, won't they?)

Please don't start another thread!!! I can guarantee that in fewer than 5 posts there'll be someone accusing you of promoting puppy farms or warning that poodle crosses are the work of the devil.

clam · 29/06/2014 21:09

Oh, and I've just scrolled back on this very thread and seen they've already been out in force on here! Second post in! Grin

"But they will, won't they?"

Um, there might be a bit of...usually only dodgy breeders have puppies left without buyers as good breeders have a waiting list and have the parents got their health test certificates? Off the top of my head that'd be hips and eyes for that cross...but I could be missing some.

But it is a better cross in terms of traits than a whippet and a poodle.

Seen all certificates for both parents, met mother dog, been encouraged to visit as often as we like while we wait for pups to get old enough to leave (good sign, I thought), saw lovely calm, friendly bitch and puppies in the very middle of the living room being played with by children ... I know that I will be told off in a big way ... rather as every aspect of the way in which I am bringing up my child is deeply wrong an no doubt everything I do as a teacher ... The only way with MN is to try and filter out the actual facts and real experiences ...
Incidentally, I didn't particularly want a poodle cross, but most of them seem to be ... I have always wanted a standard poodle!!

Hi, I am not a mom. I am a Dad but I saw your post and I had to reply. I have a Whippet crossed with a poodle and let me tell you they are amazing. I have 3 young girls that pull their tails and squeeze their necks and on and on and lily has never bit any of them. she is not always calm however she is lively and always wanting to play and needs lots of exercise. She is hypo allergenic. She is the fastest dog you will ever meet and she is 7 years old and still acts like a puppy. You would never regret buying this breed. Don't listen to those people down bellow with their biased comments on something they have clearly never owned.

Here is one of my videos of her and I will continue to post more so everyone can see what an awesome breed this is. Purebreds are the inbreeds that you no longer should want.

I dont know how anyone could say this is a bad or fad cross... clearly they dont know nothin.

arbrighton · 01/02/2017 21:43

what is not calm about a poodle? Apart from pre walk excitement and when visitors arrive, i have a snoozey chilled dog

mrslaughan · 01/02/2017 21:46

I like my friends poodle - but I couldn't live with him - he is not calm in the house - at all ....... I would describe him as neurotic......

Foxesarefriends · 01/02/2017 21:51

I don't think it's a rescue v bought thing. Some rescue puppies do come from known backgrounds. Likewise many bought puppies from puppy farms or backyard breeders are purchased with no or little genuine information about the parents. So if someone is going to buy a pup off the internet without meeting parents or where no effort has gone into selecting the sire and dam, I would rank that as equally as "risky" as your average rescue pup with limited history on health and temperament. My personal preference is still a rescue puppy, even if parents unknown, plus putting work into training and socialisation, due to the ethics of encouraging all but the most careful breeding.

^
This, nothing to do with snobbery or 'sneering', stop encouraging yet more puppies when loads in rescue. I have a poodle cross, she was dumped, there are so many around.

Foxesarefriends · 01/02/2017 21:53

Oh for goodness sake, someone has searched this thread out and bumped it to promote his YouTube stuff or breeding or whatever.

Zombie thread.

Whitney168 · 02/02/2017 11:04

Whippets calmer than Poodles? I think perhaps you haven't met many Whippets and need to do a bit more research!

arbrighton · 03/02/2017 20:24

yeah sorry foxes i didn't notice date for most of the posts til after i posted then realised i'd been a tit

Foxesarefriends · 03/02/2017 20:26

I see that I have been banging the same drum for years though Grin. On here under a different name on the original post.

I have a so called whippet poodle cross and he’s fast nippy and mega difficult to potty train but our Bernise was fab and quick learner. We had a lurcher cross collie before and he was calm and very clever but not great with toddlers.
it’s all in the training and consistency calm house to begin with as with all puppies can and are unpredictable and can be just as busy as young children. Just do a rescue as you can choose a dog that needs a home and not add to the crazy pocket of puppy farms
good luck
