Annoying jumping up when I'm getting his food in the bowl

My pup is 5 months and gets very, very excited at mealtimes but I find it annoying as he is leaping up trying to grab his bowl from the worktop etc.

He has got a little better with me reinforcing 'sit for food' by giving pieces of kibble every now and again. He is trying really hard and sometimes lies down as I can see then it's harder to leap up but his self control just isn't quite there yet. What can I do to stop this? Just more of the same as I do think he'll get it eventually and is trying or is there something else I can do to stop the jumping?

Persevere.

Behaviours you are trying to get rid of often get worse before they get better. It's called an extinction burst - basically they are really frustrated that a behaviour which they think should achieve something isn't resulting in the desired effect, so they try extra hard before giving up completely.

It will get better, just make sure not a morsel comes his way until all four are on the floor!

Put the dog in another room whilst you are preparing his dinner. Begin to teach food manners around something that is not so difficult for him.

When he can quietly sit when you have a small piece of food then you can begin to add in the bigger distractions of his dinner when he is very hungry

my dog is older, but i find just standing up very still and not moving until she calms down works best.

Thanks guys.

He can sit and leave an individual piece of kibble for a good while with a leave it command but just gets too excited about a whole meal. I can tell he wants to stay in control but can't quite manage it the whole time yet.

Is my best no jumping command down or is it preferable to stick with sit or lie?

If he's struggling with self control just use a command that's easiest for him. For example, in that situation I might try to ask my dog to lie down because it's incompatible with jumping up, but he would find sit easier because I wouldn't be asking him to take his eyes off the prize Grin

Mutty's suggestion isn't a bad one if he's really beside himself though.

Keep working on the leave it command though. Self control takes time to develop and he's very little still.

Definitely a sit.

I would be training him with a weeny bit of food in the kitchen where you prepare his food.

If he is ok to sit with kibble. Then take the kibble to the counter where you prepare his food and ask for a sit. Gently and calmly give him the food.

When he is 100% with this I would either try a more exciting bit of food eg sausage or I would put one bit of kibble in his bowl. Whichever is easier for him - I would then work up to the all food in the bowl only when he can be calm.

We started with sit and gradually increased the amount of time before we put his bowl down, then gradually got him to wait until we say ok

He's 11 months and can now wait calmly for quite a while and makes sure he looks at me

We do a lot of impulse control generally so he now automatically sits when we're waiting to cross a road, when we're going through gates or doorways, when he has his lead taken off when we get to the park and before we throw his ball

If he's sitting he's not jumping up :)

lepetitchienbrun · 19/06/2014 21:19

We are working on all that...sitting when a car passes on the little road we walk on and when crossing road with a 'sit for road' or car command.

Doing lots of leave ti training with a treat he has to leave and also when waving enticing things such as a tissue- which he totally loves nicking.

Sounds then like it will come good with persistence.
