My Weimaraner (a rescue) is between 8 and 9 years old, and as I've been at home all day since we got her she's used to being wherever I am. I've lost count of the times I've almost fallen over her or stood on her paws as she's always at my side.
A few weeks ago I started working from home and my clients come to me. I can't have her in the room with us because she is constantly looking for attention, and once someone starts making a fuss of her she won't let them stop. And she won't go and lie down in a corner quietly either. BUT, she's not happy to be shut away in another room either (even if my DC's are there to keep her company). She can open every single door in the house and apart from the damage she's doing to the doors it's getting to be a nuisance me taking her back to another room all the time. It's got to the point that not even biscuits will entice her back.
I was thinking the quickest option would be to fit a gate to one of the doorways. I think she may be a little old for a crate, and don't know if that would distress her anyway. The maximum amount of time she needs to be out of the way for is one and a half hours.
Has anyone had any luck training an older dog to stay in her own space or use a crate?
