Just for a change, bad news about my dog...

I've posted about my dog before, but I'll give a brief rundown. He's a Rottweiller and he'll be 2 next month.

He developed elbow dysplasia at 4 months old, had surgery at 6 months, he was a great candidate for it to be really successful, but it wasn't (it was improved but still had issues) and he was about 9 months old before I could walk him again, he was left with a bit of stiffness and was on permanent metacam.

After I could walk him again he was a bit OTT with other dogs, not that surprising as he'd missed a big chunk of socialization. He'd been to puppy classes and was attending obedience classes, but he wasn't really improving, so I signed him up for classes with a behaviourist just after he turned 1.

3 weeks in he suddenly and unexpectedly reacted aggressively to the behaviourist. After check ups and referrals it seemed to be spinal pain, nothing shows up on x-rays but various vets have narrowed it down to the same spot on his back. It took quite a long time to hit on the right combination of pain relief and in the meantime he got worse, reactive to dogs, strangers, cars and bikes.

He's muzzled and on lead always (outside) we've had to build him a kennel and run to have visitors in, but, he finally started making progress about 8 weeks ago as we got the painkillers right...he was still having seemingly random bad days which we were about to investigate food for as he also has some food intolerances, but, we had made tiny forward steps with training now that the pain was under control.

So this weekend...

He was admitted to the vet school with sickness and lethargy, they found a perforated ulcer from the Metacam and they had to remove a portion of his stomach and intestine, there's a fairly high risk of complications because of where the ulcer was, if it goes wrong any further surgeries would compromise his quality of life... they gave us odds slightly higher than 50/50 of him pulling through.

He's been stable for the last two days, but isn't eating yet, which is starting to be a bit concerning, though not too worrying yet and they're reducing his morphine today to try and see if he perks up enough to eat.

Just thought I'd post because I have posted about him before and it gives me something to do other than wait for tomorrow's update from the vet or worse an emergency call because something's gone wrong.

He's eating Grin

I'm not going to see him because the nurses have made friends with him and they were a bit worried that me coming might upset that. They said I could if I really wanted to, but I think it would be unfair on him, so I'm not going to.

He's still in ICU, but they're happier with him and if he stays stable today and keeps eating they're on about moving him out tomorrow and possibly home by the weekend to recover at home.

That's great news. It's always tricky to know whether to visit. I think one of mine would cope and one wouldn't, but it would break my heart.

tabulahrasa · 11/06/2014 11:52

Because it was good news I'm ok without seeing him...I miss him loads and I want to smoosh his wee wrinkly head, but he hasn't been anywhere without us since his elbow surgery - so I don't know how he'd cope with me going, but leaving him there...and I don't want to make it harder for them to look after him.

I think you've made the right decision to not visit as he will probably just get upset that he can't come home . Glad he is continuing to improve .

Raskova · 11/06/2014 20:28

I think you've made the right decision too.

Big excited woooooooo about him eating. GrinGrinGrin

tabulahrasa · 11/06/2014 20:41

I'm trying not to be too excited about the eating, because he's not out of the time period for complications yet and it was a tricky op.

But I'm going Grin too, lol

Yeah I think it's just better for him for me not to visit, if he's behaving for them he's easier to treat and he'll recover better, so I don't want to jeopardize that just to have a cuddle.

He's coming out of ICU, he's eating chicken well and some biscuits, they're keeping an eye on him to make sure he doesn't start being sick as they wean him off the drugs, but he's bright and comfortable and they're happy with his recovery.

Grin

Also talking to his other vet, it seems likely that the worse days he was having behaviourally were down to his ulcer, so if, and of course that's the tricky bit, we can control his back and leg pain without NSAIDs...we might actually get somewhere with the behavioural issues.

He's coming home this afternoon, I'm so relieved.

He is by far the hardest work of any dog I've ever met, nevermind owned...but he is also lovely and I've missed him loads.

Yay! Happy dance for tabulah

moosemama · 13/06/2014 11:31

So pleased he's feeling better and coming home.

It'll be fab if you can control his pain without the NSAIDs and it turns out the other behavioural stuff was due to pain from the ulcer and he starts to make some real progress there. Smile

"It'll be fab if you can control his pain without the NSAIDs and it turns out the other behavioural stuff was due to pain from the ulcer and he starts to make some real progress there."

That's what I'm hoping for...he's been responding anyway, so if the off days he had are gone, that would be fantastic.

It may not be as easy as that, but I can hope, lol.

I'll be keeping everything crossed for you/him. Smile

Raskova · 15/06/2014 00:43

How's he getting on? Does he have a name?

tabulahrasa · 15/06/2014 10:11

He's doing ok, I think...quiet, but, alert enough, he was sick last night but I phoned the vet and they said just to keep an eye on it, it's probably just going to take a while for everything to settle down properly. If he keeps doing it they can give him more drugs to help with it.

He's not eating a vast amount, but he is eating...not dog food right enough, lol, but I'm humouring that given how ill he is.

He's coming for a stroke every so often and has had a halfhearted play a couple of times, but spends a lot of the time sleeping, which to be fair is understandable - he's got a wound that runs from pretty much under his ribs to between his back legs, I think I'd be less active than he is, lol.

His name is Brock, or numpty boy a lot of the time, lol.
