Is my dog just a people's dog?

I have two dogs. (both less than 1 year old and a few months apart)
The younger one is very playful and plays with any dogs and people.
The other one is a bit aloof.
He is not aggressive or fearful, just doesnt like playing with other dogs (even the ones hes known for months) but he likes being fussed over by people.
I take him out on his own and both together but he just doesnt show any interest, he just sits between my legs or of the other dog owners.
When at home these two play like naughty children.
I walk around other dogs to encourage him to play but nothing.
Should I keep trying or just let him being cool?

Its like Billy no mates. If theres a new dog joining our dog get together, he may have a quick sniff.
Thats all the interest hell show.
And then, theres his brother running all over the place with the other dogs.

Just in his temperament to be more people oriented. Don't try to force it - if he wanted to play he would. Some dogs just don't.

I had one that would play at home but wasn't bothered about playing with strangers dogs, or interacting with them at all really. It was just her personality :)

I would say it's just his preference.

Neither my Wheaten or Oldgirl were ever bothered about interacting with other dogs, they would say hello nicely if necessary, then go off and do their own thing. My Wheaten in particular much preferred people to other dogs. Both were extensively socialised and neither fearful or aggressive they just weren't all that bothered about other dogs.

I've found over the years that quite often my dogs are happier playing together than bothering with other dogs out and about. I suppose if they have a friend to play with already and aren't naturally sociable to begin with it kind of makes sense.

If I was a dog I probably wouldn't want to play with other dogs either - based on how I feel about mixing with other people - I'm not scared to do it, I just don't enjoy it all that much. Blush

One of my previous dogs was like that. Very aloof. He preferred people and not at all interested in other dogs. You just have to make sure when you're out you play and interact with him and let others play with their own little group. Smile
