What can I bath my dog with!!!

So, my lovely staffie has found fox shit to roll in. He stinks!! It's too chilly here to hose him off in the garden, I need to bath him. What can I use, I don't have any special pet shampoo. So it's either herbal essences, strawberry scented kids shampoo or just plain water. Although judging by the smell of him, water isn't going to cut it!

I'm thinking kids shampoo as it's probably a bit milder and might mask the smell!

The kids shampoo will be fine.

Baby shampooSmile

that's stinky! tomato ketchup is meant to neutralise skunk spray - would prob work on fox poo too if the strawberry shampoo isn't up to the job by itself.

KatieKaye · 26/05/2014 08:17

I used Johnson's baby shampoo with chamomile to wash my westie's backside yesterday and it came up beautifully. It dealt with the noxious smell too.

If the fox poo is really bad, try wiping off as much as you can with pampers before you bath him - the water will be less minging!! And use a mitt to avoid getting your hands all covered in poo.

Tomato ketchup removes the smell of shit. Don't ask me why, but it really works!

xxreeldancerxx · 26/05/2014 08:18

What ceres said ..... Tomato ketchup will sort it out!

KatieKaye · 26/05/2014 08:18

ceres - I am now very tempted to try out tomato sauce on my westie - he'd look lovely dyed a delicate shade of pink!!

Dogs are delightful aren't they.

Mine had diahorehha (??) all over the bedroom floor yesterday. So spent ages cleaning that.

Then went and rolled in fox poo so I had to bath him to get rid of that. Found a load of clag nuts round his bum so had to scrape those out his fur with my finger nails. Then the fur at the end of his willy was all crusted up and took ages to decrust that.

I wanted to bleach myself head to toe by the time I was done.

KatieKaye · 26/05/2014 08:26

Ah, the manky "willy wig" as we refer to it. Have been known to take embroidery scissors to trim that (very carefully!!) when it gets totally repulsive. Likewise cutting out clags stuck into his fur round his bum. (and yes, they are washed and disinfected afterwards)

Westies have very delicate stomachs. I have been forced to become a dab hand at cleaning a dog's manky bum. I actually specified an extra deep sink in my new kitchen, with a shower tap thingy to make bathing him easier. Worth every penny.

VivaLeBeaver · 26/05/2014 08:29

I've never had a boy dog before and am rather grossed out at the willy mank. Did consider the nail scissors but he's got such a tiny willy I was scared I'd cut it off.

KatieKaye · 26/05/2014 08:39

I have someone else to hold him down to avoid accidents and never cut to close to his actually willy

And yes, it is vile! Especially on a white dog. Not that he stays white for very long.

My mum uses pantene on her dog, it makes his coat look gorgeous. All soft and silky. Hes a manky dog as well though hes got a gunky eye at the moment so that needs cleaning a cpuple of times a day, hes a tibetan terrier in full coat so when he does his second or third poo of a walk (think hes using it to mark cos his 5 second wees just arent enough) the poo gets stuck in his coat. And he stinks of wee cos it gets all under his underneath and he constantly marks on walks. Mucky dog

SpicyPear · 26/05/2014 13:58

If it's a regular thing I would get a bottle of fox poo shampoo to keep in the cupboard. Tomato sauce works but it's a bit messy to use and I'm not keen on my dogs smelling of tomatoes!

It's not recommended to use human shampoo on dogs as the ph levels of their skin are different. Human products can strip the protective layer that stops them getting flaky skin, bacterial build up etc.

lemonfolly · 26/05/2014 15:46

Please don't use human shampoo on a dog, it can be toxic to them when absorbed into the skin
