Nighttime without crating puppy

Pup is now 11 weeks (12 on Thurs).
We've had her for just over two. She has a crate in the kitchen for a daytime den to get away from kids (door never gets shut) and a regular bed in sitting room.
One of us has slept downstairs with her since we got her. Wanting tips on retreating back to our own beds soon! Anyone that's not used a crate overnight got any tips please?
She cannot be upstairs, as this is the cats' safe place/ sleep zone- plus too many Lego bits etc..

Just to add, she generally goes from about 11/midnight til 6.30 before she pees..

Whoops, posted too soon- also meant to add that whilst she starts the night off in her bed, she ends up sleeping up on the sofa next to one of us- she came from a litter of nine, so I guess she needs the closeness still..

If she's got a crate there why don't you use that at night? One of us slept on the sofa for the first three nights - by then he was sleeping from about midnight to 6am so felt safe to leave him. We've never had a peep out of him since - as soon as he sees me go to the cupboard to get his bedtime biscuit he virtually throws himself inside the crate and gets snuggled up with his blanket

I second that, I'm not sure you should be sleeping downstairs after 2 weeks!!
Use the crate.

ummm, we never slept downstairs with the puppy, we just put bbc world service radio on quietly for 2 nights. We have never used a crate, just stairgates across various doorways. My advice would be to use the crate & go to bed!

Where does pup sleep in the day? We have a 3 month old pup and she has been on her own in the utility room, which is stair gated, from the 3rd night.
A few accidents the first week or so but now as long as she doesn't go any longer than about 7 hours through the night she has been clean when we go to her in the morning.

This is only me experience and you have to find a solution for you. We started pup in the crate at night and had a set routine for her. She knew taking her collar off meant bed time. At 6 months we started leaving the crate door open and then we never put her in there but let her choose. Like a toddler she would sneak upstairs and jump on the bed but after a few nights of saying no bedtime she soon just went back to wherever she wanted to sleep. I know we sound mad but it worked for us. We got rid of the crate and now she has her corner under a curtain next to a wall with a vet bed and blanket

We didn't use a crate at all, but handily had a room next to our bedroom with a laminate floor. Pup slept there and when he whimpered during the night I got up and took him out and then resettled him on his bed. After a set hour dh got up instead and then he would sleep with pup on the sofa. After a while he didn't wake up in the night/early morning and we got to sleep through again. I think it took a few weeks, but not too long really (he is now coming up 5 and sleeps most of the time, either with company or on his own - we think he must have some hound in him :))

I don't use the crate at night because the cats come in and out through the flap and would wind her up- also she can fit through catflap so bit dodgy if for whatever reason she did get out.
Can't put crate in sitting room as too big..
Think am going to chance it by just gating across sitting room doorway at night and listening out Shock

One of our cats constantly goes in and out if the cat flap all night and dpup never stirs - he sleeps much more deeply in the crate - it's like he can completely switch off in there whereas when he's using his other bed he stirs at the slightest noise/movent

catbus · 21/05/2014 21:18

One of our cats is great with her, because he takes no shit. The other two, however, just run away so pup chases Hmm
So, because of the danger of bolting, I have cunningly demolished rearranged sitting room so her crate is in there with other bed in it. She is currently not impressed but I shall start the retreat tonight Smile
