Which breed?

We are about to move to a rural location and have pretty much decided to get a dog. I started a thread a while back and got some good advice about things to consider before deciding to get one. So now it's just a question of which breed...

So - I would ideally go for something between spaniel and labrador size. We will have a decent sized 4 bed house and a medium garden. Plenty of walks not a problem - I won't be working for a good while once we move, and after that only pretty part-time.

We have 2 dc aged 6 and 8 who love dogs and a cat who is very chilled and likes dogs too. Oh also - I'm a (slow! ) runner, so would like a dog which could run with me.

I particularly like gundogs (had a golden retriever as a child) but would certainly consider other types.

Anyone got any recommendations? Oh and... my parents had a black lab who was so boisterous they had to return him to the breederSad . They are convinced it was because he was a male (unlike our very docile retriever bitch). I'm sure it was mostly their fault for inadequate training, but are bitches generally easier?

Thanks in advance! Smile

I second german short haired pointers. I got mine whenehe was 7 had him 18 months and he's fabulous.
He's easy going, very easy to train very very affectionate and loves company although they do suffer from sa so keep that in mind but it is easy overcome.
Very good with children and like to please.
There is a gsp rescue site if you are interested.

Ooh I really like pointers! I wondered if they were a bit big though - taller than labs but less bulky, no?

Mine is quite tall but when I've seen others they're smaller than him so a bit on a par with labs I think. They're supposed to be slim Blush mines on a diet as he's been spoilt living with granny for a few months andh hehe's put on a little weight!

Our girl is very slim and compact and not very tall, although she had a bit of a tough start to life (used as a brood bitch from very young) so I wonder if that's had an impact on her growth.

I saw an English pointer the other day and he was enormous!

Well - we have now properly agreed in principle that we will get a dog, and we would both really like a GSP! Now we just need to get through the house move and then find a breeder... I will no doubt be back on this board eventually with pictures and requesting advice about looking after our puppy!

Oh that's exciting. They are really sweet natured, affectionate dogs and very beautiful. Looking forward to photos!
