What do you put in your dog's Kong?

Ds2 has bought Bumbledog the most enormous kong. I can only let him have it out of sight of Tylerdog as we nearly had WW3 in the kitchen last night. What do you put in the kongs? Tdog is going to the vets tomorrow so it is the ideal time to let Bdog have it!!!!

We feed our lab millies wolfheart dry kibble, as its a grain free kibble, water can be added to it (without it swelling/starting fermenting) it goes soft and you can press down and pack in more. Usually lasts him 10-15 mins.

You could probably freeze it too as I've heard people do that, but our lab isn't keen on frozen stuff.

I gave him some cocktail sausages in it last night!!

I use my dogs' normal kibble mixed with a tin of sardines/pilchards in tomato sauce. Mix it up beforehand and give it ten minutes or so to soften, then spoon it in and press it down to pack it in. As I get near the top I jam in a layer of dried kibble and block the top hole with fish for dogs salmon mousse or another good quality wet food.

Another one, which seems to take him longer to empty is to stand the kong upright in a cup, half fill with kibble then crack an egg into it and mix up with the kibble. Microwave on full power for just short of a minute, mix up again, press down and leave to cool. (You have to be quick to get it into the microwave or the eggwhite can make it's way through the kibble and out the bottom hole - although you could block that with some cheese first if you wanted to. You can then either top off with some of the sardine/pilchard mix or put in almost anything else.

If your dog likes fruit you can smear the inside of the top half with banana and/or put some apple chunks/slices in.

Cottage cheese or natural yoghurt are good sources of probiotics, but not all dogs tolerate dairy.

Some dogs love and can tolerate peanut butter. Both mine love it, but the wind they produce after eating it is truly eyewatering so I don't use it myself.

Oh and I do freeze mine. I make up a batch on Sunday evening, one for each school run that week and they all get frozen. I definitely notice they seem to take longer for him to eat as the week goes on, so I guess the longer they're frozen for before you give them to them the better.

My older dog doesn't really appreciate frozen ones, by the pup loves them - they're also really useful for cooling dogs down when it's hot in the summer.

One thing to check for with a big kong is that he can't jam his lower jaw in and get it trapped inside. It's thankfully pretty rare, but there have been cases of dogs getting broken jaws and needing surgery to have kongs removed when they've been given the wrong side. I'm a little paranoid about this as my pup's a lurcher and has a very thin, pointy lower jaw that he can jam into an XL, so we have to be really careful which kongs he's allowed and he currently has two L when we go out instead.

I stuff chomp in it and freeze it. She loves it

mycatoscar · 09/04/2014 19:05

Mine had homemade liver cake and her kibble in hers.

I put something yummy in the small end, usually a bit of cheese or ham or chicken and then mostly fill with kibble and then a bit of wet food/peanut butter/squeezy cheese/Kong paste to plug it. My 8 month old cocker spaniel can normally hoover one of those in a few minutes. I use the small puppy one and the next size up classic and the puppy one defo takes her longer. I have to be careful not to pack it too tight or she just gives up and looks at me with those big sad eyes Wink.

I use Kongs for both her meals, I very rarely use a bowl now.

A puppy trainer recommended packing a hoof (bleurgh) with wet food and freezing it. This works well when we leave her for a bit longer than usual as it takes her quite a while to finish it and it leaves her with something to chew (she doesn't chew the Kongs once the food is gone)

Aked · 09/04/2014 21:43

Mine has kibble, cheese, cocktail sausages, ham, chicken, primula cheese and anything I can stuff in generally!!

Kleptronic · 09/04/2014 21:46

Rancid chicken
Rancid cheese
Rancid hotdog sausage slices in mouldy philly

Do you see a theme developing? Grin

Ok ok just to be clear they're not walking twitching, he's never been ill and wants his kong whether I'm going out or not!

CrazyBabies · 13/05/2014 20:39

What are kibbles?
I'm new to all of this. Have a 6 month adorable beagle. We have a kong but haven't used it for a while and dont know what to put in it!

Owllady · 13/05/2014 21:10

I rub peanut butter right up the top if it's a distraction we need
On a ferry or similar (like at work etc) yogurt kibble frozen

Owllady · 13/05/2014 21:12

Kibble is just dry plain food (not sure about tinned but I put tinned chappie in and freeze too)

Owllady · 13/05/2014 21:13

My dog ate a 2 day old pizza out of a school bag Saturday
Sunday when I was in bed she apparently squatted in front of h and did a huge 'cow let's
So be warned klepto :o

Owllady · 13/05/2014 21:14

Cow pat!

Keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 13/05/2014 21:43

Peanut butter mainly, sometimes his normal dry biscuits or once in or twice I've put in fromage frais then put in the freezer

catbus · 15/05/2014 15:41

Can I use peanut butter in a kong with an 11 week old puppy? - best frozen? Is there anything I shouldn't stuff it with at this age?

DaddysBigTummy · 18/05/2014 16:35

I put cooked pasta and plug the end with peanut butter and then freeze it all. Takes them quite a while to get it all out and cools them down too

Lilcamper · 18/05/2014 17:16

All sorts ogling filler ideas here

Lilcamper · 18/05/2014 17:16

And that should say KONG Smile
