That really
DH went to visit his friend a few hours away they only see each other twice a year.
When DH got there his friend had 3 dogs locked outside in the pouring rain with no shelter. DH asked why they were there and the friend said they were his he bought them as puppies from a family who were struggling he got them for his gf but then he dumped her and she said she didn't want them anyway and left the friend with them.
DH asked could he bring the dogs in and friend complained but did it in the end.

DH couldn't see any dog things in the house and the dogs were rather thin .Turned out the dogs sleep outside in all weathers and food is just chucked for them when the friend feel likes it.

One of them banged the door with its nose and friend screamed at them to shut up grabbed a picture frame and chucked it at them. The friend didn't seem to care and told DH to mind his own business.

DH went to check them out and they were very timid at first but they got used to him and were very sweet. DH asked could he take one and keep it and then they could try and find a rescue centre for the other two.

Friend said if DH wanted them he could have them all and if DH didn't take them he would just leave them in a river.
DH call his friend a prick and has brought all three back with him.

They are lovely dogs 2 are 10 month old Labrador cross and the other is a 12 month old Labrador. They are very sweet but it does look like they have been beaten by friend.

DH has gone to get some dog supplies to get them through the night with us. I was hoping you could tell me what to get and tell me what to do next.

Thank you

I agree with Booboostoo. 3 young dogs who've had a rough start AND DCs! The older dog who has had some training sounds like it would make a good family pet. The sooner the 2 that you can't keep are rehomed by the Dogs Trust, RSPCA or similar, the sooner they can start settling into their new homes. The rescue organisation will also do some basic training & socialisation with them.

Good luck!

Just one more thought. If you decide to keep one before you chose get a professional behaviourist in to help you assess the pups. Puppies/dogs from reputable rescue centres will have been assessed with a number of things like possessiveness over food and toys, reaction to loud noises, compatibility with other animals, etc. so that the rescue can match them with the right family. These dogs come from an unknown background and it may be that you won't really know what problems will emerge until they are 12-18 months old. The behaviourist should be able to read the puppies' reactions and tell you if any of them are particularly timid or particularly bolshy and which one is more suited to a family with children.

Don't worry I do know how much work rescue dogs are I have always had rescue dogs and I volunteered at a dog's rescue as a teenager so I am aware how hard it would be.
We have been talking to my neighbours who live on a small farm with a field thing around the back of us and they said they would be interested in the two younger dogs they are retired but in very good health and I think they would love the dogs devote time to them, would really enjoy the challenge and we wouldn't have to split the dogs up too much. (We really want to keep the older one)

That is great news about your neighbours! I hope they decide to take the dogs and give them a great home, they deserve it!

FreakinScaryCaaw · 17/02/2014 01:50

poor dogs Sad looks like they will all have lovely new homes now though thanks to your dh

The youngest two dogs went to live with our neighbours yesterday.
Our boy was a bit upset at bedtime but he calmed down and has been fine since. We are going to spend today without the dogs seeing each other so they get used to it. And then meet up tomorrow.

They have both been microchipped and our boy is going on Friday to have the snip.
