We are planning on getting a border terrier later in the year i have spoken to some local KC breeders all lovely want to meet us and have good ground rules before selling pups and also want lifetime contact with us and the pup but and here it comes DH is having trouble getting his head round £550-600 for a puppy i am besotted and don't care so that doesn't help, but i really do think for peace of mind and getting the right dog for us this is the best and only way am i wrong?
For £550 we will get the puppy it will be chipped and vet checked puppy food 12 weeks insurance and puppy pack oh and life time support and advice and also if we cant keep the puppy etc the breeders requires we give it back to her
Thank you in advance for opinions and advice
Oh thing is DH has seen all these dogs on gumtree pets4homes etc for £150 £250

I don't doubt you love your dogs needastrongone. My issue isn't with dog owners or dog lovers. My issue is with dog breeders, who continue to pump out litter after litter whilst dogs of the same breeds are languishing in rescues and dying in pounds.

The world doesn't need yet another litter of Labradors, Collies, Spaniels et al. I'm sure I could find hundreds of them living in cages, kennels and foster homes across the country.

I feel anger towards breeders and sadness towards the dogs. My local rescue (that I volunteer at) is full to bursting right now (and I had to unofficially foster 2 pups last weekend) yet my local FB selling page has this week banned 2 different people who advertised their dogs puppies for sale (they don't allow 'live' sales). One litter hadn't even been born yet :(

So I wasn't digging at you needastrongone. It's just something that I feel strongly about and it distresses me to read yet another OP wanting to use yet another breeder who is going to bring yet another lot of pups into the world.

LtEve, I love you.
I wish everyone thought like this, it's so depressing seeing people I know and used to like, buying inbred dogs and ditching them once they realise the hard work and leaving some over burdened sanctuary to pick up the pieces from their stupidity and cruelty.
Someone I know had a dog whose breed is notorious for being a genetic mess of pain and diseases, it died young and within a few hours they'd bought another one on fucking gumtree. Seriously. Aaaaaagh!

needastrongone · 13/02/2014 13:10

Understood Eve, and fair enough. Smile

I personally didn't have a good experience with the small rescue, and perhaps the advice I was given ref spaniels via dogstrust was just one member of staff, as my friend was told the same.

Shame - 'cos we are both good owners, but different. I like the training and exercise and 'working' my dogs minds, she just loves the company of hers and a cuddling her on the sofa Smile

I do wonder if your general person on the street even knows breed specific rescues exist? I didn't!

Evenbetter - not all folk who buy puppies from breeders are like this, my dogs get more attention than my kids! Just like not all breeders being in it for less than savoury reasons.

get your DH to look at it this way OP - your well brought up pup is going to cost you £550. A gumtree pup will cost £150. So if your dog lives to be 15, then the "good" pup is only going to cost £27/year - a bit over £2 per month - more. You can ask the name of the pup's mum and dad and get on the kennel club website to work out its coefficient of inbreeding (high number= bad) and compare it to the breed average. You can see how many litters the bitch has had (limited by KC rules)
A non registered breeder could have mated a brother and sister together and you wouldn't know. I also suspect that a good chunk of gumtree breeders use castoffs that weren't good enough to make it in the show or working world- OK if it was slightly the wrong colour, not OK if it had dislocating kneecaps or something.

I know a KC reg is no guarantee of good health and temperament- and there are non-KC breeders who do a good job- but the breeders you mention do sound good and as a vet I see a lot more gumtree pups with health problems than I do KC reg pups that have been well started.
Buying from gumtree encourages breeding for gumtree (£150/pup tax free with no time, effort or money spent on the part of the breeder, two litters per bitch per year with no limits on number of litters per bitch in her lifetime....no wonder people keep churning 'em out).

i wrote a very long post but deleted it but basically thank you all for your imput and opinions i realise the whole breeding whilst there are so many dogs in rescue debate is a sore one and i for one do agree, But i guess it comes down to we want a puppy selfishly yes a puppy (and i have looked locally for a rescue puppy but there wasn't anything suitable) so i am trying to be as responsible about it as possible hence a good breeder, the lady we are set to see has bred Rottweilers and Borders for many years she shows them but they are her pets and also working dogs on the farm, she only breeds when she wants a pup (not even once a year) so i feel safe that she at least seems respectable we will meet her tomorrow and go from there i have lots of questions and having already spoken with her she has quizzed me (i really think its a case of if she doesn't think im suitable i wont get one)

with regards to health and breeding Borders are renound for there health they are a hardy working breed originating from a cross, and only recently became a KC breed

Floralnomad · 14/02/2014 14:28

Apparently the main issues with Borders is PRA , CECS and hip dysplasia that's probably enough to be going on with .

catstolemypants · 14/02/2014 14:36

ahha I didnt ever expect to win you round luckily I know these dogs have been hip scored breeder explained that recently cases have been popping up so had hers done, I will google the others and quiz her tomorrow many thanks

Dam you Havant & your clicky links Wink

I really want Sheena with her sad, doleful, 'please love me' eyes.

I want her, I want her

fanoftheinvisibleman · 14/02/2014 18:50

Hope it goes well cats

HavantGuard · 14/02/2014 19:03

Well ...

.. She does need a home

Slippersandacuppa · 14/02/2014 19:47

I know it wasn't really your question, OP, but I just wanted to weigh in. We've just rescued another dog and have nothing but good things to say about the rescuers we used (Many Tears). They are very thorough and won't rehom a dog just to get rid of it. Saying that, they aren't silly with ticking boxes and have let us adopt a puppy (who, incidentally, would be worth a fortune if she was sold - something we only realised after we'd been matched and couldn't care less about) with me being heavily pregnant with baby number 4. If you do decide to consider a rescue dog, please look on their website and whatever you decide, have fun!

Slippersandacuppa · 14/02/2014 19:49

Aha! Just clicked on the clicky link. Duh.

musicposy · 14/02/2014 20:46

Yes, damn you Havant, linking! Wink
I've now phoned up about a rescue dog today and we already have two dogs and seriously don't need another (but this dog is soooo beautiful and sounds just right for us and vice versa!)! I thought it would be impossible to persuade DH but DD1 and I talked him round in less than 10 minutes Grin

TheBookThief · 15/02/2014 13:59

Music is it Sheena, please tell me it is, she sooo wants to be loved
