Rehoming my sister in laws springer

Please help me help my sister in law.

They have a springer spaniel who is just a year. He's basically has irritable bowel syndrome and requires a super specialised diet.

He's had ongoing health issues with this usually resulting in vet stays. He is insured. They pay though the nose for it but the new vets (they moved) will not accept payment from the insurance comp. they have to pay upfront.

He costs a fortune in special food a month. Insurance payments and every month something else comes up. They worry he is suffering through their lack of money and needs better care.

ATM he has a seed stuck in his ear and needs to see the vet. They won't see him without payment. She's phoned the RSPCA people and various other places but as they are not on benefits no one will see him.

They want to rehome him. Both are incredibly sad about it all but just can not support him anymore. We have spent the day on the phone trying to get him re homed and seen.

The vets are looking in to rehoming him but we have not heard back.

What else can she do?

It's a horrible situation.

This thread is disgusting. Our old girl died in September.
To read about someone executing their little pet for no valid reason fucking disgusts me.
Please ensure your relative never inflicts herself on another animal.

Scuttle, that is shocking

Another thing this thread could highlight is vets and their bloody specialised diets.

Many veterinary schools bring in companies such as Hills or Royal Canin to provide the nutritional unit of training. Clearly these are never going to be given in a non biased way. Many vet practises sell and receive commission from Hills or Royal Canin. In the majority of cases Chappie or BARF would be better suited to helping the dog and would work out cheaper.

I'm not suggesting that you should ignore your vet and run off and stock up on Chappie if he prescribes a certain diet, but if that diet does not work or you cannot afford it, get a second opinion, do your own research, try and find a vet that supports BARF, many vets do not because they are not trained in it but some do.

My terrier is supposed to be on a prescribed food for a skin condition, he gets along just fine with Nature Diet chicken and veg or sensitive. My cat has IBS, he's supposed to be on Hills, he gets on just fine on JWB White Fish with the occasional chicken wing.

Such a sad story.

My sisters dog has digestive problems ibs you name it. She has patiently kept her dog healthy, through trial and error getting the right food etc. She's not wealthy, but she does love her dog.

Such a sad story.

Scuttle I agree with your comments. There is literally a few days between OPs first post and the post that delivered the news of the dog being PTS and my thoughts were the same as yours regarding rescues. It can take quite awhile for a foster or alternative accommodation to be found.

The RSPCA disgust me. I refuse to donate or support them.

Owl lady your case was so different, I would have done the same so would most good owners. This choice I wouldn't have made, my dog has IBS and though ok now thanks to barf we have had moments that look make horror film sets look like show homes.

I'm shocked by this, no real attempt was made to re home so you just had a lovely animal put down. I despise people like this and there should be strict rules in place for anyone wanting to own a pet.

Here have my 2nd Biscuit

I was very shocked when I read the outcome. it seems very little was done to either cure or re-home this dog. I have had two dogs with bouts of continuous diarrhoea and in my experience if you keep trying you will find a diet that suits them. On an interim basis rice and egg usually works.

was talking to my (young) vet earlier. He was saying that his job was very depressing. Last week he had to put five animals to sleep. I hope your SIL's wasn't one of them. Must be bad enough putting an old sick animal to sleep - but awful to have to kill a young unwanted dog.

Owllady · 11/02/2014 13:22

Vets have one of the highest suicide rates, it is an emotional job. I really don't know how they do it.

Thank you for all being so supportive to me, I do really appreciate it
