Puppy crying at night

kilmuir · 28/01/2014 21:55

How long did it take your puppy to settle?
We have a crate, but he cries all night. I know i am supposed to ignore, but he is very loud.
He is 8 and a half weeks old

My puppy is the same age as yours. She cried all night the first night (thurs) and then has cried a few times during the night since. She generally settles in her crate within five mins.

Try putting a large blanket over the crate to make it like a den. Feed puppy in there so he knows it's secure place. You also shouldn't let puppy out until there has been silence.

He seems to be getting worse! I pop him in crate when i do school run etc. all was quiet when i came through front door.
Do you get up in night to put out for a wee?
Blimey its a few years since i had sleepless nights with babies , but its all coming back to me!

No, I haven't been getting up at night. She's only had one wee overnight for last two nights so I'm hoping she'll naturally begin to hold it.

How was last night? There's a new puppy mummy thread with lots of advice. I can't link from my phone

Sleep downstairs next to crate for reassurance or have crate in yr room for the first few nights

Who says you're supposed to ignore them???

Lilcamper · 29/01/2014 09:27

Ignoring a distressed pup can create future separation issues. Have the crate in the bedroom with you or sleep on the sofa next to it. You can offer gentle reassurance and this will also help with house training, pup will wake you when they stir and you can pop them outside to wee.

Mine is 9 and a half weeks so we have had her 10 nights. Each night got better quickly and after about 4 she went straight to sleep all night. ( can't quite recall, am exhausted !) DH lets her out once in the middle of the night for pee and poo and puts her very quickly back . I'm not sure if he needs to still but we want to avoid having accidents in the crate.
She goes into her crate on her own in the day too sometimes.

Why would you leave a puppy to cry at night? They are babies, just separated from their siblings and litter mates.

Either put the crate into your bedroom, then slowly move the crate further away each night until it's downstairs as the puppy settles well.

Or, we slept downstairs with the pup, initially next to the crate with the door open, then door closed, then moved further away. It only took 3/4 nights.

Their whole world has changed!!

Oh don't worry i have decamped to settee with duvet, i was reading on petforum about crate training. He is our first dog to have a crate so all new to me.
I do let him out for a wee in night,

I was a softy - I slept on the floor for the first couple of nights with pup next to me, then pup was in crate while I was on the floor, then I moved to the sofa before going upstairs and leaving pup downstairs alone.

Pup had been going out at least once in the night, so I would get up if I heard movement.
