Why does my dog keep licking the bloody carpet?

He'll lay there of an evening, and we think he's licking his paws or something. But no, he's licking the carpet. Over and over again.

It's getting on my nerves now. We've got this bastard sisal carpeting and when it gets wet it stains forever.

Why is he doing it? It's lots of random places so I don't think there's something on the carpet.

His tongue looks alright. He's fine in himself.

Confused

He's maybe just a licker. My dog is a licker, he licks the floor, the walls, the chair, the cushions, the cupboards and anything in sight. I've had him at the vets and was told it's just habit. So now we have to tell him to stop so he sits up and just licks the air now!

MargotLovedTom · 24/01/2014 10:36

Is he a bit bored maybe?

You could try giving him one of those bones stuffed with tripe to have gnaw on instead.

MargotLovedTom · 24/01/2014 10:37

Grin at dog licking the air.

HenriettaPie · 24/01/2014 10:41

He's licking the radiator as I write his!

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 24/01/2014 10:41

Also Grin at licking air. Dogs are strange.

He's nearly eleven and he's never done it before, that I've noticed. Could be a new habit I guess. He's got enough toys kicking around the house if he's bored.

I won't worry too much for now then. Well unless he starts any more wierd stuff.

My dog licks the floor if he sees something on tv. He just sits staring at the tv licking the floor. Part of my thinks that he doesn't even know he's doing it!

Floralnomad · 24/01/2014 11:05

Could he be deficient in something ,perhaps try some multivitamins or something ,it seems odd that an older dog would start doing it. My mum has a 'licker' but he has always done it ,drives me round the bend .

LetThereBeCupcakes · 24/01/2014 11:09

I have a licker. She would adore sisal carpets. I think it's the texture. Her favourite thing in the world is when DH doesn't shave so she can lick his stubble whilst he sleeps. She licked a lot of the glittery baubles at Christmas too. We were picking up sparkly poo for days.

PeriPathetic · 24/01/2014 11:20

Mines a licker too with a speciality of bare toes. And carpets.
I was told it is a sort of self comforting thing.

Catsmamma · 24/01/2014 11:25

We have a licker....he just can't control his tongue....it's always lolling out when he sleeps. He especially likes to lick the sofa...it's the dog sofa and leather so i am not too bothered

but he will lick the floor as well, and feet, and socks. He is a GSD if that helps narrow down a breed habit.

HenriettaPie · 24/01/2014 12:09

Mines a Yorkie so not breed specific then! Grin

VivaLeBeaver · 24/01/2014 12:13

Mine bloody bites the carpet. I've got tufts all over the place where he's tugged some of the carpet up. I don't know how he does it, its not sisal and its not a really fluffy, loop carpet.

Then there's the two massive holes he's scratched on the landing carpet.

I think I'd quite like a licker.

Floralnomad · 24/01/2014 12:27

viva better than biting people !

pigsDOfly · 24/01/2014 13:40

Cats my dog licks my leather sofa as well. She tends to do it briefly before falling asleep sometimes.

She also used to chew the carpet a bit when it was new but thankfully seems to have stopped that possibly due to my hysterical reaction the first few times I saw her do it.

VivaLeBeaver · 24/01/2014 18:16

Yes at least he hasn't bitten anyone for a while. Grin

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 24/01/2014 19:02

Sounds like I need to be glad he just licks. Grin

Henrietta I have a Yorkie licker too.
Her preference is to lick the cat but if the cat's having none of it anything will do. Air licking is a favourite, reckon it's her equivalent of air guitar.

Wolfiefan · 24/01/2014 22:49

My mum has a carpet licking dog. I think it's the lazy/fat way of cleaning their butt. Wipe arse on carpet. Luck carpet.
Dogs are grim!
Grin

Wolfiefan · 24/01/2014 22:50

Lick carpet ffs!

LavenderFox · 25/01/2014 08:40

I suspect it is a bit like nail biting and thumb sucking for humans, not really a major sign of anything, just a habit they build. Mine licks the duvet cover which means it's probably time to change the sheets before they become too aromatic for him...

PatTheHammer · 25/01/2014 12:57

Ooh this is really funny. My Grey girl licks the leather sofa all the bloody time. At first I assumed she was mopping up tiny crumbs or something but she does it for ages in the evening. Could it be because the leather was once part of an animal iykwim?

Maybe not though if some dogs are carpet lickers too. Licking the radiator is just plain strange!

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 25/01/2014 15:19

Not just us then. Grin

Maybe we need to invest in some salt licks, like horses and cows have.
