New puppy night toilet trips

New beagle owner here, 9 weeks old. She is sleeping in a crate and settling easier each night. As a family we sleep from 10.30 to 6.30 am. DH has been letting pup out for wee in garden at night ( last night midnight and 4 am). She wees in garden and he returns her quickly to crate

Is this what people do and if so how long for ?
Also How often in the day would you take her out. ? I've been doing very 20 mins if she is awake and she wees nearly every time.
Had previous bad experience of toilet training dog so am nervous !

I didn't get up in the night at all from the beginning though generally in the week we are in bed midnight till 6am. We got him at 8 1/2 weeks and he was clean through the night after a week. A broke crating advice too as split a larger crate with bed and paper. I think now ultimately they either get it quickly or they don't with regard to the little things.

I think the main thing is regular outside in the day. We did hourly and also after waking, eating or an accident. Accidents lessened after a couple of weeks for us and he was reliably 'asking' to go out from 12 weeks so I acknowledge we were beyond lucky...if only potty training ds had been so easy Grin. I also think that physically staying in the garden (to applaud!) with them is important too.

We have had an eight week old cocker since Saturday and are using a crate. Night one involved two hourly garden trips, night two she woke at midnight and 5.30 and since then has slept through 10 hours. During the day we go outside approx every 30 mins. It's been surprisingly easy. Now if only she would stop biting my sons feet.....

We firts got our pup when he was 9 weeks (now 5 months old!). For first week I got up and took him out when he cried during the night - first couple of nights it was 2 -3 times but by the end of the 2nd week I only had to get up once. Then after that he generally slept through from about 11.30 until 7. THrough the day it started with every 1/2 hour, then once we started to recognise his "signs" it got less. Now it's generally every 2 hours unless he's asked out meantime. I have to say I have found toilet training this pup a lot easier than our last dog many years ago. Then teh advice seemd to be to train onto paper, whereas taking him outside regularly seems to end up with quicker results!

We also got a pup this week (collie) he's just turned 9 weeks now.
The first night he was really upset so I stayed up a lot of the night and his howling was very loud and kept waking the children. It meant I took him out as regularly as I do during the day
The second night he woke me twice and I took him out both times
The third I woke at 5.30, not sure if he actually woke me but I took him out.
Tonight I plan to leave him unless he wakes me. He's not done anything in his crate ever and has started asking to go out so I want to encourage this. At the moment I don't care if it's during the night as every time he has been take. Out he has gone (normally poo too)

I'm not sure I'm doing it the advised way, it seems I may be soft compared to some, but it seems to be working for now and I prefer to go out than clear up mess.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 23/01/2014 17:06

I've just realised we've had him more than three nights so I must have done more of the same inbetween. I have a stinking cold so am a bit bleugh at the mo and my memory is shot

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 23/01/2014 17:08

Could we start a little clique of us with pups of the same age Grin

Pufflemum · 23/01/2014 19:47

I'd like a new clique. The new puppy mum thread is very helpful too. I've just started a thread about the pup biting the children's feet. Does anyone have any advice?

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 23/01/2014 20:06

Nope. Would love to know the same. Getting very nippy. Sometimes attaches himself to my trouser leg.
The puppy thread is great but we could have our own too as they're all older on there now.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 23/01/2014 20:18

No eye contact and 'stand like a tree' when they are land sharking Smile It takes time but does help.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 24/01/2014 06:49

I've just got up. Not quite sure what time dh went to bed but there were no accidents until I was going out the door with him (the puppy) this morning.

Pufflemum · 24/01/2014 08:54

That's good TWTCJ. Puffledog made it through the night again too. I'm now off to buy the children hard slippers and some bitter apple spray to try and deter the foot biting.

On another note she has found her bark since yesterday. Huge barking session at the watering can ( which was very amusing to watch) and this morning another less funny one directed at the cat. I'm assuming distraction and removal are the only way to stop this?

I've also made an appointment with a dog trainer to come and see the family tomorrow to make sure we are consistent. I'll share any tips. On the phone he said the first thing to do is remove any squeaky toys as they activate the kill instinct! Also any rag type toys.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 24/01/2014 08:56

So what toys are they allowed?

Claybury · 24/01/2014 10:12

Is that true about squeaky toys? Oops she loves them !
Will ask my trainer tomorrow too.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 24/01/2014 11:31

I'm impressed you both already had trainers. We were planning on lessons once he was old enough to go and socialise. Got his Second jabs on Tuesday

Pufflemum · 24/01/2014 11:34

Having just returned from the garden centre with our slippers and looking at the toys I would guess bone things, balls and tug toys, but I will check with him tomorrow. The squeak thing make sense as a rodent or bird would presumably squeak when caught and maybe the rag toys are too similar to our clothes, flappy trousers and skirts.

Pufflemum · 24/01/2014 11:35

Our trainer is due this being our first ever dog so I want to ensure we are starting off properly. We are seeing him once then going to his puppy classes in a few weeks.
