Your views on leaving dogs tied up outside shops

Apologies if there's another recent thread on this, I couldn't find one.

I never nip into shops and leave the dog outside them tied up. I've had friends/family say I'm silly for this.

My reasonings are;
-She's a pedigree and I'm scared of her being stolen, DP and I would be both absolutely gutted!
-She's a lovely natured dog but, she's still a dog and if somebody hurt her or scared her, she might give a warning 'snap' that would be misconstrued. She's usually fine with strangers, but a friend of mine once tried to pick her up about 5 mins after meeting her and she growled at her (I did scold said friend and say that was a dumb thing to do with a large dog ,or any dog, anyway)!
-If other dogs approach her and attack her that could result in a fight.

DM thinks I'm neurotic and paranoid. Friends have said the dog stealing thing is daft as it rarely happens. I don't know, to be honest how common it is.
I would prefer it if I could leave her outside shops to be honest-it would mean I could walk more often than drive, incorporate walking her into daily errands, not have to leave her at home when I nip out places...
What are your thoughts on it , generally?

I have never left mine tied up outside a shop in 18 years of being an adult owner. My never did it either, for all the reasons listed. I do leave my son outside with her but he is a sensible teenager
People tie their dogs outside my youngest school, one right by the gate and I just couldn't and wouldn't do it . Myself.
I also think being a responsiblemember of society means you are mindful to how it affects other people too

Owllady · 20/01/2014 14:09

My never should say my parents

Tiredemma · 20/01/2014 14:11

I never would. God if anyone stole her I would be devastated.

I do take her around to Sainsburys- there is a lovely Big Issue seller in the foyer everyday. He will look after her for me and I give him a sandwich on my way out.

Wouldnt risk it anywhere else though

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/01/2014 14:14

I think your right tbh. Dog stealing happens and they wouldn't be going to a good home :(

And people can be nasty too and torment the poor things. So much easier to leave at home or with dp/dc outside

I wouldn't do it either, for all the reasons already given.

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/01/2014 14:30
Shock

OMG that just brought tears to my eyes :(

Poor poor dear dog. Nasty bastards

CEvert · 20/01/2014 14:31

@Oldbagwantsnewbag...

That is so cruel.

Owllady · 20/01/2014 14:32

God that's awful :( what is wrong with people

BeverlyMoss · 20/01/2014 14:38

NO I wouldn't leave my dog tied up outside, - until a few moments ago it was for fear of him being taken, now I've that dreadful story from OldBag to add to my reasons.

Sad

Why the fuck would anybody kill a dog? Evil bastard! It makes me so cross.

curlew · 20/01/2014 14:42

Old bag- what an awful story. But, but, but. Such a vanishingly unlikely thing to happen. We can't lead our lives based on things which aren't going to happen.

What happens to me is that I pop in for a pint of milk and come out to find my little thespian surrounded by anxious mumsnetters people convinced she's been abandoned.......

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/01/2014 14:45

That's even worse that they were never caught :( cowardly spiteful vile bastard!

That poor dog Sad. A couple of years ago, also in kent, a boy was bitten by a dog tied up outside a holiday camp reception. The boy went over to stroke the dog, who was a family pet and considered good with kids, but was probably scared. The owners were convicted of having a dangerous dog out of control- that, and the guilt if my dog did bite someone especially a child, means I wouldn't leave them tied outside a shop.

MelanieCheeks · 20/01/2014 15:04

I do this all the time! Only if I'm just popping in for a pint of milk or something, I wouldnt leave them for longer than 5 minutes.

They would bark pretty loudly if anyone tried to approach them.

But I totally understand why people would think twice about it.

moosemama · 20/01/2014 16:31

I wouldn't for the reasons you state, but mainly because dog theft is on the increase in the UK and I just wouldn't take the risk. You only have to have a look at the listings on Dog Lost UK to get some idea of how many dogs go missing every year - and how few our reunited with their owners.

SnakeyMcBadass · 20/01/2014 16:57

I don't leave my dogs tied up anywhere. The spaniel is fearful and would be a wreck, and there's no way I could trust him not to react if another dog was tied near him. The poodle cross is far too cute to be left anywhere, he'd be taken in a heartbeat.

cathpip · 20/01/2014 17:05

Leaving a dog tied up outside a shop is asking for it to be stolen, husbands work colleague had her dog stolen from her garden! Also what happens if it bites someone.....

Beccadugs · 20/01/2014 17:14

I've done it once. Was very stressful and I won't again, for a the reasons listed!

I do tie her up
Outside the kids play area when going with friends DCs as part of a trip to the park, but then I can see get so very different!

Misfitless · 20/01/2014 17:40

Thanks for this thread, OP.

I have left our much loved dog tied up outside shops before, but have felt uneasy doing it if I'm honest.

Not because I thought she might come to harm, but because she gets upset.

After reading this I won't do it again.

She has the loveliest nature I've ever known in a dog, and she would never snap.

It has honestly never occurred to me that someone might tease or harm her.

Thanks again.
Thanks

1MitchellMum · 20/01/2014 18:16

Don't.

Have a scroll through doglost.co.uk if you're unsure ... I always walk the dogs first and THEN go out separately to buy newspaper and bread.

NuttyMuttie · 20/01/2014 18:22

You would be mad to leave dogs tied up outside of shops. Dog theft is huge at the moment, dogs have also been killed by cars reversing into them when they have been tied up.

Also a dog was killed by a Kid on a skateboard that just charged straight into the dog that was tied up and had no way of escaping.

exexpat · 20/01/2014 18:27

I don't leave mine outside partly in case of theft, but mainly because he is over-sociable and jumps up to say hello to everyone who comes close. There are one or two dogs in my area I regularly see sitting outside shops without even a lead - mine would just follow me in, or run off in search of company.
