We have a 9 month old lab. We also have a 11 year old VW diesel saloon car which we have to replace very soon as it has a few problems that will cost lots to fix. Pup is currently on the back seat with a hammock/seatbelt, but want him in the boot area in the new car as we go very muddy walks which was ok in the old car.

Ideally looking for a used small/medium sized economical 5 door hatchback, budget ~£10k, with easy access for a heavy lab to jump into, ideally a low flat boot with no lip. Would prefer diesel as I do >1500 miles a month commuting to work and the car will need to last us at least 6 years.

dh is currently thinking a 2-3 year old diesel Ford C-Max would suit.

Would you recommend your car?

Would highly recommend a 2-3yr old mazda 6 estate, but the petrol version gets fantastic reviews and the diesel not so good.

One friend said recently they keep forgetting it is not supposed to be 4 wheel drive Shock.

Nice low boot and very large.

boot looks good in the Mazda 6 its got the low idea I would looking for, but its quite a big car, looking for something I can park at Tescos a bit smaller.

We have a zafira,, both our dogs (19 month cocker and 10 month lab) go in the boot with harness's attached to the plug bit of the seat belts. We are hoping to change it to a skoda Octavia which I've had recommended to me by various different people.

I have an Audi a3 sportback (bigger boot) and I fit two german shepherds in the boot with space to spare!
It's diesel and £30 a year to tax and gets roughly 60mpg.

I would definitely get another!

I've just bought a skoda fabia estate for me and my golden retriever.

I've got a VW saloon that my golden will happily get into the back seat of.

DH has a qashqai+2 that we bought to carry DDog and DDs buggy. Dog is TERRIFIED of it. He has loads of room though.

We have Honda crv (the old style 1) for our 2 pointers it's fab, I use to have my friends lab in as well!

We have a Kia Sportage diesel which our Rottie is fine with. DH would love the Sorento but too expensive! He really likes the Sportage though (I rarely drive it).

Most, if not all, hatchback cars have a lip in the back. Most 4x4s tend to be too high off the ground for a lab to jump in and out of safely. Best bet is an estate car.

paddythepooch · 19/01/2014 17:48

Smax. But we have to lift lazy lurcher in and out of his crate. Sure a lab would jump!

I have a BMW estate for my Goldie. He jumps straight in the boot and lots of room too.
