Cheap meat

Besides chicken wings and offal what's the cheapest human grade lean meat? Do you buy fresh or frozen? I noticed that some mince like minced beef works out more expensive than chicken thigh fillets pound for pound. They are getting bigger and so are their appetite.

We have a chest freezer in the shed and buy frozen from Natures Instinct, they use Human Grade Meat in all their products. The cheapest is £.55 for their working dogs chicken product 1 Kg. The other types are a bit more expensive but still cheaper than the supermarkets. You have to take into consideration postage though. I feed raw, but can be quickly fried or microwaved if you prefer.

Do you mean natural instinct? If so, I had a look at the products. There is a high % classed as moisture?

I have been getting the meat from the supermarket and butchers but it’s getting more and more expensive over the years.
Chicken thigh fillets work out £5.50 per kg. Chicken breasts cost more (Don’t know why as it’s dry and doesn’t taste as nice as thighs).
Other meats are more expensive than chicken generally.
As you said chicken wings and offal are cheap but too much of it can cause constipation and offal can be very rich/containing too much vitamins.
Like you, I’m looking for cheap lean human grade meat.
I don’t have a large freezer so difficult to stock up large quantities.

jpkramer in the nicest possible way I think you are confusing yourself a lot with this. Try googling the moisture levels in meat in general. A quick google has just told me that a raw chicken for human consumption is 69% moisture. Meat naturally contains moisture! It does not mean it has been added. Aren't we meant to to 70% moisture as humans?

They meat you are buying your dogs in the supermarket has the same moisture content as the raw suppliers...they just aren't labelling it for you!

Yes I meant to say Natural Instinct and £1.55 per KG chicken. As Fanoftheinvisibleman said I think the water content is just natural water content in meat. The meat looks very good quality.
I did try out another supplier last year, can't remember the name. the meat came in plastic bags, was cheaper then N Instinct but I prefer the meat from N Instinct, seemed fresher to me.
It all depends how much spare time you have to look after and source food your dog/dogs also. I have young twins and a chronic illness so Natures Instinct is perfect for me.

Please ignore my daft prices!!!!! Having a bad day pain wise, think it's affecting my brain ;)
Working Chicken costs £2.55 per Kg

I've been using Natural Instinct (Working formula) for my puppy since I got him four months ago and it's been great, small non sloppy and non smelly poos. He hardly drinks at all even though water is always available so I presume that's due to the level of moisture in raw meat.
I do feed him sardines and raw egg sometimes, particularly if I've forgotten to defrost meat.

Do these come to your house chilled and you have to put in to the fridge/freezer immediately or are they stored at room temperature?

fanoftheinvisibleman · 16/01/2014 14:11

They come frozen. They are couried in polystyrene boxes and stay frozen so you transfer straight to the freezer.

I ordered from Nutriment for the first time yesterday at 10.30 am and it was packed away in my freezer by midday today still ftozen solid!

NCISaddict · 16/01/2014 14:12

I pick mine up ready frozen as I live near their HQ but I believe they're delivered frozen and go straight into the freezer.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 16/01/2014 14:13

Oh and I know you say you don't have a big freezer. My neither ...I ordered 10kg and it has easily fit it 2 freezer drawers along with about 15 bagged bones and 10 or so individual bagged up meals I had left.

NCISaddict · 16/01/2014 14:36

I get 12kg at once and it fills 2 drawers, have to squeeze the bones and treats in but it doesn't take up too much space.

Butterflylovers · 17/01/2014 08:09

If they go national via selling through the supermarket chains they would make a killing. There are so many ppl who would like to feed raw.

InTheRedCorner · 19/01/2014 22:43

You can buy free flow and blocks from pets at home.

It's cheaper to buy from a local supplier and I source extra from the butchers if lucky and our local nursery has started stocking it in cribs and drabs.

I feed based on her weight. She gets 2.5% of her weight a day which I break down to 80% meat 10% bone and 10% offal.

It's actually easy to do and so much better for her.
