We've had our little chappie (7kilo's) for 3 months and he's a cross between long haired Jack Russell, Yorkie etc. He's about 2 1/2 and although we tried dry food - wainwrights - several times he really wasn't interested so we stuck to wet dog food which he would eat sometimes but didn't seem keen on and went between either the runs or constipation.

Last week I thought I'd cracked it when I found Bakers beef moist chunks which he loves but just seen on here that it's really bad.

Please could anyone suggest any other moist good quality foods - the only ones I can see are Pets at home own brand or Highlife..

Oh yes I would avoid Bakers in any variety (mc donalds of the doggy variety) .
Ours love Skinners Ruff and Ready , we buy it in scats .
it has loads of textures and is softer than most dry foods .

We feed Millie wolfheart dry kibble which s really goodquality. You can add wam water to it and leave for a bit to soften up/form a little gravy. Expect you could try ths with most dry kibble and then reduce amount f water as they got used to it.

You might not want to know (and fair enough), but I don't buy into fussy dogs. No healthy dog will starve itself... If it leaves food, it isn't hungry enough. Just take the food away after 15 minutes, and don't offer anything else till the next scheduled meal. And don't add stuff to the food to make it more palatable... They'll just hold out for it every time, because you're rewarding exactly the behaviour you want to discourage.

Dry dog food has too many advantages to give up on it altogether for a 3 month old dog. It stores better, is better for their teeth, allows for lots of mentally stimulating feeding options, and can slow down speedy-eaters. There's a multitude of really good dry dog foods available (we use burns). There may be good semi-moist ones, but I just don't know, sorry.

Furbaby, knew skinners field trial duck or salmon and rice get great reviews as a mid range food, but hadn't heard of skinners ruff and tuff before. Have you seen it on whichdogood? It's rated very low due to ingredients like wheat glucose syrup (i assume this is a sugar which has no place in a dog food) and isn't grain free like the other skinners varieties.

Thank you for advice weallhavewings
I will check out whichdogood .
our 16 year old staffy has had it for ages and loves it , we did move 7 month old pup on to it but vet did say pup would be better staying on Vitalin puppy until he was 1 .
Not that surprised about about glucose syrup as it is very sticky .
Just coming to end of sack so think we will be reviewing what we feed our darling dogs too Blush

Do a fair amount of googling before continuing to feed bakers is my advice!
I slightly disagree re the benefits of dry food as listed above but I am an advocate of BARF when possible. However as a more straightforward alternative, pets at home do Wainwrights wet food which seems pretty good? If you google the Dry Dog Food Index and the Wet Dog Food Index that should give you some ideas.

toboldlygo · 07/01/2014 21:32

PaH's Wainwrights wet trays are good quality as are Naturediet trays, Applaws tins and Natures Menu (this last one in trays, pouches, cans and frozen mince blocks or nuggets).

Skinners gets such good reviews for its other varieties I'm surprised they are risking tainting that reputation with this new variety.

furbaby · 07/01/2014 21:39

Thats it weallhavewings skinners has always been good and with this one it is a little softer and is more interesting for an old girl with weak teeth .
I do feel a little ashamed that I didn't check it out more before I fed it to old girl .
But hey we live and learn .

Antalya1 · 07/01/2014 21:50

Sorry I'm showing my ignorance but what's BARF?

Bones And Raw Foods or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. :)

It's only Skinners duck/turkey/salmon and rice that are decent quality and a good price, the rest of their varieties are fairly poor in terms of content.
