Rehoming my beautiful baby :(

Woolyhooker · 07/01/2014 10:48

My lovely, clever, beautiful boy :(

I'm allergic to him, and it's getting worse. I was fine when he was tiny, but as he's grown up it's gotten gradually worse to the point I can't cope anymore. I love him dearly :'(

He's an eight month old black lab, how do I go about it? And how do I make sure he goes to a good home? My hooman babies are going to be devistaed too :(

Google Lab rescue in your area - there are specialist breed rescues for most types, and certainly for labs. In the perfect scenario, they will find him a foster home until a permanent home is found.

They will be able to talk you through fostering and rehoming. If they are really up to capacity they may ask you to keep him a little longer while they work on it, but I realise that might not be possible if he's making you ill.

SO very sad for you all Sad

selfdestructivelady · 07/01/2014 10:53

No advice but Sad for you.

Bowlersarm · 07/01/2014 10:55

That's so sad.

Homealabrador is a reputable rescue. Have a look at their website.

HavantGuard · 07/01/2014 10:58

Did you get him from a good breeder? If so, they should be your first port of call.

sebsmummy1 · 07/01/2014 11:05

Oh bless you.

There will be a Labrador rehoming place near you I am sure and I promise you he will be snapped up as they are such wonderful pets. I'm sure the new owners will keep you informed as to how he is so you don't feel you've just passed him into a black hole.

Big hugs xxx

Wooly - If he's KC registered and from a reputable breeder, they would and in fact should be your first post of call.

Please don't think that I am trying to make you keep him, but have you investigated any potentially medication or methods to manage the allergy at all?

I only say this as DH is asthmatic (severely) and also allergic to loads of things Smile. He manages absolutely fine with our Springer weirdly, but I have wooden floors, vacuum daily and groom said Springer daily too, just to help.

Or even a blood test at the doctors to ensure it is actually the dog? Just that, DH had a few days of a tight chest when we got our puppy, then it settled.

needastrongone · 07/01/2014 11:19

ps - sure the KC contract stipulates that you must contact the breeder if it ever transpires you are unable to keep the dog? Or something?

Woolyhooker · 07/01/2014 11:31

It's his saliva I'm allergic too, and unfortunately the antihistamine that suited are no longer effective. Short of bathing him daily, wearing gloves and having every inch of me covered I don't know what else to do :(

Will be in touch with his breeder this afternoon, though I have a feeling she won't be able to help out much. Her breeding dogs have retired, she has four dogs as family pets now.

It is definitely him, he went to my mums for a while when I was recovering from surgery and all of my symptoms went :(

What a sad situation Sad

Try the breeder. I am a bit of the opinion to be honest that they have a moral obligation to take back the dog at any point, it's part of the responsibility of being a breeder. In reality, I know this won't happen very often, but it should. Our Springer's breeder would for sure take him at a moments notice.

Hope you are ok. Poor you.

LadyTurmoil · 07/01/2014 16:37

There's also a Lab/Retriever FB group here you could chat with them...

Woolyhooker · 07/01/2014 17:39

Have decided to keep him for the time being, going to discuss more options with my doctor. I can't bare to part with him, don't think the dc would forgive me either, thanks for all the suggestions though.

I'll just have to put up with being a rashy, swollen mess lol :)

Do you have any relatives who could offer respite care?!
Do get a decent vacuum or hard floors you can wash daily.
See GP
Wash dog bed often
Wear gloves to groom (outside!)
Limit rooms dog is in (eh not bedroom?)
Hope you get some relief.

NeedHoliday · 07/01/2014 19:01

Am so very sorry you are allergic. I'm sure you have tried everything and I'm not sure if it will help with allergy to saliva but I wash my dog in this

www.allergycosmos.co.uk/pet-pet-shampoo

They also have some great air purifiers on the site.

BrownSauceSandwich · 07/01/2014 20:06

Ugh, dog saliva! I have a very mild allergy to it (stroking dog makes my skin red, hot and dry), but nothing like yours... I'm so sorry. Have you tried giving him a go-over with baby wipes daily, just to get off the surface gack? Definitely wear gloves for feeding/grooming, and follow wolfie's advice for general allergy care... Saliva may be the worst of it, but elevated histamine levels from a minor allergy will make it all worse.

Failing that, I agree that you should contact your breeder first - people on the doggy grapevine often hear of people searching for a dog, and breeders have more practice than most in vetting potential homes. Then cast your net for breed rescues, who will have a tonne of advice, even if they haven't got an instant answer.

Good luck!

PMDD · 08/01/2014 07:49

Where do you live? Do you have children/is your dog used to children/mixed with (young) children regularly? Is your dog used to/good with other dogs? Does your dog live with cats?

ender · 08/01/2014 08:48

Wearing a face mask when brushing dog and emptying vac etc can help with dog allergies. I'm allergic to my lab, get rhinitis and itchy eyes and mask really helps. The hair is so fine it floats about and likely to be breathed in.

Woolyhooker · 08/01/2014 10:19

PMDD, I live in the west of Scotland. Yes to all your questions (I also have PMDD funnily enough, though it's no longer a problem!)

I am going to try the baby wipe suggestion, it's the only thing I haven't tried yet. I'm fine with the hair, I Hoover at least twice a day and the

Only rooms he has access to are the living room, kitchen and hallway (occasionally the bathroom for a bath)

if it helps at all we took on a lab from a family who needed to rehome her when husband/dad died suddenly and it all worked really well. we did it through word of mouth but i would suggest a good lab rescue for sure. very sad for you all:(
