Has anyone got carpet and a Labrador?

I have wooden floors but I'd love to have carpet but I worry about keeping it clean and free of dogs hair. So wondered if anyone here has carpet and how they keep it dog hair free?

We have carpet, and if I'm honest, it is quite grubby.

we have wooden floor downstairs and carpet upstairs. Although the dog only goes upstairs to sleep and mooch around on a night the dog hair on it is amazing. She's black and carpets are cream, when I hoover (which is every other day upstairs) you can actually see where I've been!

I have carpet and a Labrador. My carpets are scotch guarded so I mop them very other week with diluted bio wash liquid and a well wrung out mop. Removes the surface dirt. I also Hoover at least every other day.

I'll be honest though, my 7 yo DD is muckier than my dog. Glitter is a sod to get out of carpet, evil stuff it is.

Fuck no!

stephenisjustcoming · 07/01/2014 10:35

I had carpet downstairs, and two dogs - I've just had it all replaced with oak flooring, and the smell in the house is noticeable from the moment you walk in. In that, there isn't one as much.

Carpet + big sheddy/muddy dogs = nightmare. If you're not hoovering, you're putting down towels/newspaper. And it does retain more of a doggy smell, even if I tried to convince myself for years that it didn't.

Pmsl honey dragon I guess I'll stick with wooden floors.

I would keep therm.

Our whole downstairs is either wooden floor or tiled. I honestly can't imagine not being able to mop the floors as and when I need to!

DH is asthmatic, I am sure this helps loads too with his breathing. Certainly helps with the dog smell and general keeping on top of the hair etc. Plus candles and plug in fresheners (OCD, moi?!)

We have a rug in the living room that the dog plays on, less than 18 months old, it's already minging.

Glitter is the enemy Smile

We ditched the carpet because the smell and grime got too much especially with our backdoor leading straight off the front room. All this in and out business in the rain meant we had a giant mud trackBlush

Wood flooring nearly everywhere downstairs now but we had to have our hallway carpeted again because our Lab runs through so fast on the wood that by the time he got to the hall he was like Bambi on ice!

We couldn't risk broken legs so we have a grubby looking hall carpet as a compromise purely for his safety until he decides he's too old to keep bounding around like a pup even though he's 3.

stephenisjustcoming · 07/01/2014 12:12

Yes, the other downside of wood flooring is that unless you put down rugs, you can hear their claws tiptapping away wherever they go, as if they're constantly auditioning for a canine production of 42nd Street...

Having a good vacuum cleaner helps when you have carpets.... The stuff that comes out of it beggars belief sometimes!

ender · 07/01/2014 14:33

We replaced downstairs carpet with amtico flooring soon after we got our lab. Its not just the hair, there's also general slobber from toys etc which might not show up on carpet but you'd know it was there, grease from dog's coat etc. When we got rid of the old carpet it was an eye opener to see how much stuff had soaked through to the underlay, no wonder the house smelt doggy.

HeinzDoofenshmirtz · 07/01/2014 14:36

yes, stick with wooden floors and get a bag-less vacuum cleaner if you don't already have one, my dog sheds enough in a week to stuff a life-size one of him.

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 07/01/2014 14:39

I have a black lab and have tiled flooring downstairs. Would never go back to carpet as long as we have him as he sheds loads. Even with cream tiled floor (limestone effect) I have to hoover and mop at least once a day, especially in this rain. Its not so bad in the summer can get away with mopping a few times a week.

HoneyDragon · 07/01/2014 15:23

Grin wood and tiled flooring downstairs and the only rug we have is minging. One lab and two dcs means our rugs last on average 13 months before they are beyond help Hmm

Also fond of oil burners.

WeAllHaveWings · 07/01/2014 20:55

I have a 9 month old lab and carpet which, as of this morning, has about 3" missing along one edge and teeth marks Angry

Not sure what to do now as he is scared of the hard floors we have in other rooms.

mrslaughan · 07/01/2014 21:51

I don't have a lab - but have a giant breed who is a mud monster - he is only allowed downstairs and there is no way I would have carpet downstairs....the mud he tracks in, even when washed (well a hose down) and dried and the door beggars belief......but have just bought a steam mop and he is my friend........
