Which dry dog food do you feed and why?

Thanks for that link HoneyDragon. Had looked it up after your original post and liked the look of it, will definitely get her some. Is your dog fussy or does he/she eat anything? My girl is fussy so I need food to be tempting.

HoneyDragon · 01/01/2014 17:23

She's a Labrador so not massively fussy. But after one bowl of that she went on strike and refused to eat Burns or Barking heads Grin

What breed of dog of you have? I'd say the main issue is whether they will eat the larger chunks, they are about the size of horse feed.

If you can get a sample I'd be happy to post you a portion of ours?

HoneyDragon · 01/01/2014 17:23

Can't ... Gah!

binger · 01/01/2014 23:10

That would be excellent if you wouldn't mind doing that. Do you have a paypal account and I could sort out postage etc? I'd really appreciate a sample, no local stockists to ask a sample from and the actual Muhle website doesn't look as though they do samples, although I could email them first. In fact I'll do that and see if I get a response Smile

HoneyDragon · 02/01/2014 12:59

Well, if you get no response pm me. Don't worry about pp, it's not going to host a fortune to send a couple of portions [grin

binger · 02/01/2014 15:03

Cheers I've just pm'd you Smile

Used to be Royal Canin, now they're both (Weim and cocker spaniel) on the same bag of James Wellbeloved. No smelly farts, firm poos. But the Weim seems to be losing weight, so we might switch to a "big-dog" variety.

flowery · 03/01/2014 14:05

JamesWellbeloved

Was recommended by the breeder, by our vet (who is a friend) and by our trainer. Good enough for me, and the dog inhales it!

sweetkitty · 03/01/2014 23:28

Burns puppy food here but not entirely happy with it. I have to feed her nearly twice and recommended amount and she's as thin as a rake you can see her ribs. No she hasn't got worms and is perfectly healthy, her breeder has said the same thing that the recommended amounts are off. Would also like to go grain free too

MrsBungle · 03/01/2014 23:30

I feed my Weim burns - he's lovely and shiny and fit and healthy.

HoneyDragon · 03/01/2014 23:33

With Burns, it's not so much the guidelines are off. It just keeps dogs very very lean.

I found a busy week meant the weight would really drop off Hully.

Again, another reason I like the one she's on now. You feed a tiny amount, much less than even burns Shock, but it maintains her weight Smile

Barking heads I found kept weight on her too.

HoneyDragon · 03/01/2014 23:34

I also think that Burns Alert is way better than normal Burns, it is an excellent food.

HomeHypno · 04/01/2014 07:41

We use Skinners hypoallergenic, too. It is a good price ordered online and the dog likes it. He hasn't been officially diagnosed with wheat allergy but I can usually tell if he manages to eat the mother-in-law's tinned dog food from his poos and itching. She thinks I am being a cruel mummy feeding the dog boring dry food sigh.... I also give him plain yoghurt sometimes, it should be good for the digestion and he absolutely adores it.

Floralnomad · 04/01/2014 10:22

With barking Heads you definitely don't need to feed the recommended amount ,I think if I did that my terrier would look like a ball and he gets lots of exercise . I've moved onto Barking from a much cheaper food and still find it very cost efficient.

AGoodPirate · 04/01/2014 10:29

I'm not sure if anyone linked this helpful site yet?

HoneyDragon · 04/01/2014 11:35

Floral

You just said what I meant much better about Barking Heads Grin

sweetkitty · 04/01/2014 15:34

Honeydragon - I think it's because she's growing so fast just on Burns ( more than recommended) she was very thin, her breeder recommended tripe a few times a week. She's a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

I've been looking at Millie's Wolfheart and Eden. PAHs Wainwrights are doing a grain free now as well but it's 12 months +

WeAllHaveWings · 04/01/2014 17:30

sweetkitty I changed our black lab pup to Eden at 4 months old as it looks great, but he never got on with it (huge loose poos and lots of smelly wind). Tried for months to fix with edens help, changing qty and trying probiotics but no joy. Changed over to millies wolfheart last month and after a couple of days had beautiful (after months of picking up loose poos they were beautiful to me!) firm poos and no more wind. If you search around you'll see its a well reported problem with eden, not sure if its too rich for some dogs with all the oily fish in it. His coat was in fantastic condition while he was on it.

Have tried adding a little of the 1/2 bag of Eden I have left to his millies (to use up) and the smelly wind returns within hours. It just doesn't suit him so I'm going to bin as its been open for a coupe of months now.

Worth giving eden a go, but if it doesn't suit I wouldn't persevere for months like I did.

I'm happy with millies now. They have a good Facebook group which they are very active on where you can ask questions/advice. You can also phone for advice. They also sell dried lamb skin, cows ears etc which ddog loves! (Though Its a pain not being able to just pop into a shop and pickup food when you run out)

anchovies · 04/01/2014 17:40

We feed our 2 labs Simpsons as our 4 yr old lab has a grain intolerance. Keeps the weight on the skinny pair a bit better than the foods we've tried previously. Oh and it's very good value - they do a discount for working breeds.

Steffanoid · 04/01/2014 23:33

we feed our JRT mongrel a kibble called active dog crunch by HJLEAs. theyre a local animal feed mill but I think theyre country wide. we use it because its a complete meal all the same shape/colour so he can't be fussy. my mum had to change to plain kibble by them as her irish setter got fussy and meticulously picked just one shape out of the bowl Grin

notapizzaeater · 04/01/2014 23:36

James well beloved lamb light kibble

binger · 07/01/2014 22:33

Thanks for recommendation HoneyDragon. Received my sample of Markus Muhle and my girl scoffed it down very quickly. I'm definitely going to buy it when current food runs down.
