Tick problem!

lostblonde86 · 30/12/2013 10:12

Since we moved house a few months ago our two dogs have had ticks, before this they never even had 1 in the 6 years we have had dogs.

I thought it had stopped but in last week I have found 3 between the two dogs. We have tried tea tree dog shampoo that is meant to repel them (also our JRT has sensitive skin), also tick "spot on", while keeping their beddings washed and house well hovered.

Please has anyone got any suggestions on how we can stop the ticks? I think they are coming from our garden (it was a over grown mess when we moved in, now tidied but I assume they still live out in the trees that are left).

Thank you for any help in advance!

Btw when we remove the ticks from dogs we are getting the head out as well and killing themSad

Sorry to hear about this. We need some serious frost to kill them off.

Frontline and Advantix both work by making your pet poisonous to ticks (and fleas) but sadly it doesn't work instantly. At least any you miss will drop off dead in a day or two.

I believe ticks are worse in areas with lots of deer. Their instinct is to climb, so they go up eg a long blade of grass, and transfer to anything that brushes against it. They will then continue to go up until they find a soft, thin bit of skin.

So, keep the grass and undergrowth as short as possible and try to prevent the dogs from going in the long stuff.

Which spot on are you using? You may need a product like Seresto or Advantix that actually prevents the ticks from attaching in the first place.

Advantix, does prevent attachment. Frontline kills ticks within 48 hours of attachment. Cross posted.

We have 2 cats and moved several years ago to a rural area with deer frequently in the garden. Neither cat previously wore a collar but we've now given in as they had approx 4 new attached ticks per day plus loose ones which were running off them and around the house - joy! We've got them a seresto collar and since then have had no ticks OR fleas. Complete bliss and definitely no more expensive than treating them monthly.

We went to a collar too. We were getting up to 7 ticks a day off our dog. Put the collar on and nothing more. Works like magic.

Thank you for all the responses, it almost feels a relief that others are having the same problem. Just unhooked another two off the Yorkie. I'm going to tryAdvantix next as seems the most recommended.

Our garden is mostly mud, and the small amount of.grass we have is very short (roll on summer to get the garden done).

Frontline monthly. Get a special remover from vets if you don't already have one so you can twist them free from the dog. If you frontline monthly the ticks will be dead but still attached (often) to dogs. It's not unusual for me to take 5 or 6 ticks off each of my spaniels in the spring. Never let dogs on furniture, and make sure you brush your own clothes down to avoid them coming in on your clothing. My husband found one on his inner thigh once after he'd been running in shorts, and I brought one in on my jeans and found it on our bedding when I was still breastfeeding my twins. Completely grossed me out, am more vigilant now.
