Long car journey with Moo

Hi I am looking for some tips and advice from you lovely folk. Moo, our 18 month JRT is brilliant at very short car journeys however she becomes increasingly distressed on longer spells (anything over 15 minutes) in the car.

We are going to visit DH's parents for New Year who live 100+ miles away and with our preteen daughters chirping in the back I am dreading the journey!

My BIL suggested that he is able to get his terrier a 'doggy tranquilliser' when they make the journey to us and I just don't know
a) how I feel about it and
b) what I should ask the vet for, if that is the best option?
Can anyone help?

Is there anyone who'd be willing to have Moo for the time you're away?

There are doggy tranquillisers available, anecdotal evidence is that they work for some, don't work for others.

Thanks Dame, unfortunately our regular Moo sitter is away and we are pretty new to the area - all out trusted friends who know Moo are back neat the inlaws.

I'm really not sure how I feel about medication either - I wouldn't drug DDs to travel so why dose the dog! Conflicted wouldn't be in it!Hmm

My youngest daughter is travel sick so I do drug her when we travel. The tablets do make her drowsy so I guess might not be too different to giving your lovely Moo something to make the journey better for everyone.

Would a "thundershirt" be an option? They use them at the dog groomers in Pets At Home, to calm the clients.

Hi just want to update you all and to thank you all for you tips!

We have just returned from PILs and Moo had the time of her life!

Mel, thank you for suggesting a ThunderShirt, she has one and actually loves wearing it! But it turns out that our lovely girl is just nosy!

We put Moo in her travel box, on the backseat with DDs and so long as she could hear us talking she appeared quite content - well that and having a few treats popped in from time to time!

Not surprised. Our 18 month old jrt wants to see where we are going and preferably help. Once he has got over that, he.snuggles down for a snooze in a blanket.
