My old boy has gone deaf

Our lab is 13. We noticed during the summer that his hearing seemed to be deteriorating: he used to be alert as soon as a car pulled up outside the house, he'd run to the door whenever he heard the outside gate open. Since the summer he had stopped doing this, and someone could enter the house and he wouldn't notice until they were right in front of him.

But just in the last couple of weeks, he has gone so deaf he can't seem to hear anything at all. He can't hear us when we call him, he doesn't even react to any loud noises at all. It is so sad to be loudly calling his name when he is just across the room and he can't hear it at all. And of course he can't hear any commands at all, which makes it very difficult when he, for examples, runs into the house with muddy feet and can't hear you calling him back, or when you are trying to get him to move and he won't cause he can't hear the command.

I don't know why I am posting this except it feels quite shocking that it has happened so quickly, and I am sad that he will never hear us calling his name again or react to a command. He used to tilt his head in such a funny way when we talked to him, like he was really trying to understand, and now he won't do that any more. I am worried that it must be distressing for him to suddenly be in a silent world, though he seems OK...

We will of course tell the vet next time we go but I suppose there is nothing that can be done? He has mobility problems (arthritis) also which he is on medication for, but apart from this he was fine at his last vet check up a few months ago. He seem to still be very happy in himself overall, and is more affectionate than ever! Does anyone by any chance have any advice or wise words about the deafness?

I've noticed lately that my old boy who is 15 is quite deaf, he has always ignored me when he felt like ignoring me Wink but lately I notice that when I come down in the morning he is asleep and doesn't immediately notice I have come downstairs.
He has only recently been a single dog in the house, my old girl died in september and she definitely wasn't deaf Grin so I think he used to follow her lead re people at the door etc, its only since he has been an only dog that I have noticed his lack of hearing.
I doubt the deafness has come on suddenly and my boy seems happy in himself otherwise. He never walks off lead unless he is somewhere confined as he would leg it so I don't have to worry much about commands when out walking, suppose deafness is an age thing and as long as he's happy I'm not too worried about it.

My mum and dad's dog was deaf in old age, it never bothered her she adapted by being very visual, and actually my ds is partially deaf and exactly the same! One piece of advice I would give is make sure he can see you before you touch him (when possible) or if that's not possible try stamping your feet for the vibration, as the last thing you want is to approach from behind and startle him. Mums dog did get frightened fairly easily if she did not see something coming, even if it was a pat :)

My terrier is 15 and very deaf. I don't let her off the lead now and she occasionally gets a fright if someone approaches suddenly otherwise she seems quite happy. One benefit is she is no longer terrified by thunder or fireworks.

My Westie Bob went deaf over the last 12 months of his life, it was a slow progression but he was almost 14.
He would sometimes be a bit shocked by sudden movement, if he was asleep and didn't hear you walk in the room he'd jump a mile when he saw you.

We noticed he'd prefer to sit by the floor bass box for the TV or, if I had music on by the bass speaker there. I think he enjoyed the feel of the bass if he couldn't hear it. Funnily my friend has just adopted a deaf dog who loves nothing more than to rest her head on the laptop, assumedly because it vibrates.

I was fortunate with Bob really as I'd trained him with hand commands as well when he was a pup so he still had some idea what I wanted him to do.

No advice really other than love him lots and enjoy him every day. Spoil him rotten, he deserves it.

My old lass was deaf bless her in the latter years of her life . So glad we trained her with hand signals as well as verbal when a pup . Didnt work of course when she wandered ahead though . Fortunately she was slow by then and I was fitter for catching her Smile.
