How to entertain a 6 month old pup

furbaby · 28/12/2013 21:40

Pup is bouncing off the walls most of the time .
Dont remember it being this bad with last dog .
He seems to have very little interest in toys or antler .
All he wants to do is bite bark and be a pain in the arse .
please wise dog owners do you have any ideas to keep a 6 month staffy entertained for more than 5 minutes :(

Something that wears out his mind and body.

So agility, or throwing a ball to play fetch, or general training will help and tire him out.

Amandine29 · 29/12/2013 00:09

Has he got a kong? Sometimes it's the only thing that will distract my one year old collie.

furbaby · 29/12/2013 08:45

Beaver he doesn't seem to have much interest in playing fetch , he just looks at me when I throw things.
I will look out for agility classes , when we used to go to puppy training classes he always came back tired .
I don't want to over exercise him though as he is young.

Amandine yes he has 2 kongs , I put peanut butter in his which he loves .
I do try and restrict it though due to extra calories .
What do you put in your collies kong ?

plenty of walks, knacker him,

DropDeadThread · 29/12/2013 08:50

No need to worry about extra calories. Throw away his food bowls and just feed out of Kongs.

Have you done any clicker training? That will exhaust him mentally.

Whoknowswhocares · 29/12/2013 09:27

On the other side of the coin, are you certain he is not being over stimulated?
Puppies tend to become annoying land sharks mostly when they are over tired. Try adding some enforced rest times in the crate, especially when he gets all bitey

SunnyL · 29/12/2013 09:41

Training training training.

Get yourself the book Perfect Puppy and start doing the various tricks in it. With my pup we spent lots of time with a bag of treats doing the various exercises. For example when you are waiting for the kettle to boil why not practice sit-stays? How about when you are watching tv you practice your 'leave it' commands?

Lots of walks won't help because all you will get is a fitter dog who wants to go on longer walks. Also young dogs shouldnt be going on long walks As you'll end up with bad joint problems in older life.

furbaby · 29/12/2013 10:35

Thank you so much everyone for hints and tips .
I will check out Perfect puppy .
He is a smart dog and think I do need to do more training with him .

Like someone else said I would just feed him his dinner from his kong so no need to worry about over feeding.

Mine gets kibble and then whatever else I have so recently he's had a fair bit of turkey. He likes a bit of cream cheese or liver paste in the cracks of his round kong and will spend ages licking it clean. Peanut butter is good for this too but he doesn't like it. And then in the middle I put a selection of kibble, cheese, roast meat, veg, pieces of hot dog sausage (if he's lucky), gravy bones, markies etc (there's loads more stuff you can use, we are quite limited because he's not that fussed by food). If I just want to occupy him I will use just a little of something hard to get out.

The best thing to calm mine down is always a long walk but he is a bit older than yours and I second what people say about training. I set up an agility course in my garden a while back and he loved it.

MissBeehiving · 29/12/2013 15:22

I use kongs (bits of liver cake, cream cheese, kibble, meat leftovers, treats) but I also use any cardboard boxes we have to do a kind of doggy "pass the parcel" - one layer inside another and boxes taped closed with small amounts of treat in each layer. This keep our pup happy - although you do have to keep picking the wrecked box pieces up!

Also clicker training gets them thinking and this tires pup out more than a walk.

Noodles123 · 29/12/2013 17:55

Exactly what SunnyL said - you are right in not wanting to over exercise at his age, so need to occupy his brain! Clicker training is brilliant, and if he's a smart one you can teach some great tricks quite easily :)

furbaby · 29/12/2013 20:48

I downloaded perfect puppy from kindle so I will read that and maybe pup can read it after so see where we are going wrong .:)
I will try clicker training with him , I will have a look online for one , he is smart but not sure if we under stimulate him or over stimulate him if you know what I mean .
Daughters dog is 6 weeks older than ours and same breed but he is just so much more chilled than ours .
Ours alway seems to be looking for mischief :(
Thanks for the kong ides I will definitely try them .

Kikopup on YouTube has loads of cool clicker training tutorials :)

furbaby · 29/12/2013 21:09

Cheers will check out You tube .
Looks like I am going to be busy sorting pup out :)
I do pray that with help from us he will grow into a chilled out older dog .
To be honest he really is just to much at the moment .
But have started reading Perfect puppy and hoping if I can understand how he thinks I can provide him with a happier home .
He just never seems tired :( he sleeps so well at night and loves a lie in but is on the go all day .
He has had 2 walks today both off lead and he has only just settled down now .
He is relaxing on sofa but with 1 eye open just in case anything exciting happens .
