I use Advocate, flea and wormer in one, get it from the vets.

Lonecatwithkitten · 28/12/2013 15:27

Advocate does not do ticks or tapeworms. My recommended combination for complete cover is Activyl for fleas and ticks ( newest product in market) and Milbemax monthly for round, tape and lungworm.

Floralnomad · 28/12/2013 17:33

Hi can I just ask how Activyl compares price wise with Advocate ?

LEMoncehadacatcalledSANTA · 28/12/2013 17:43

Anything that isn't Bob Martin! I always use either frontline (only does for fleas) or stronghold because one of my dogs often gets ear mites, it also covers for mange and roundworm. Drontal for worms. I think i may be a bit behind the times. But did i mention - don't touch bob martin with a barge pole

sweetkitty · 28/12/2013 19:06

Good thread my pup is going toned wormed next month. Was given Drontal, have never given her anything for fleas but will need to coming into the summer. I did think Advocate covered everything??

fanoftheinvisibleman · 28/12/2013 20:32

No it doesn't, I use it along with a drontal tablet 3 monthly for tapeworm.

Lonecat, where is the best place for me to find the info showing that Milbemax is licensed for lungworm now!? I asked at my vets and they said (fobbed me off!) that I was wrong and it isn't licensed for prevention of it. I temembered you saying here it was so a queried it but they said not. I came out and said to dh I felt like they were just giving me the brush off as she had let slip that they don't stock Milbemax!

How do they compare price wise? I am not ready to go down the natural DE use as a wormer that many of my fellow raw feeders swear by but if I am honest the 4 weekly use of advocate worries me a little in terms of chemical overload. I do use it though, I hasten to add, I would just respect your opinion on the difference between it and milbemax?

Blackpuddingbertha · 28/12/2013 22:15

Lonecat, please tell more about Activyl. Berthapup had a reaction to Advocate last time so currently unprotected against lungworm but vets rolled eyes at use of Milbemax and we also have to use a collar for ticks. If we can use Activyl and Milbemax that would be great but I need to be armed for discussion with vet I swear they have shares in Advocate

CEvert · 29/12/2013 08:02

I thought if you use Advocate, Drontal and a flea collar you are pretty much covered for everything except for ticks?

Toomuch2young · 29/12/2013 08:07

Seresto collar - flea and tick. Lasts for 8 months.
Advocate - safe to use with seresto and gives all your mite protection, ear mites, sarcoptic 'fox' mites, as well as round worm etc. also heart and lung worm. apply monthly.
Drontal- worm tablet. Round worm and tape worm. Every 3 months.

Gives a very comprehensive parasite protection.

Activyl is a bio active product that kills fleas and ticks within two hours. Only launched last year.
Milbemax was licensed against lungworm last September the new NOAH book of data sheets for 2014 which practices received two weeks ago This is the relevant information, angiostrongylus is the scientific name for lungworm so you can it listed for prevention and treatment.
I feel the Activyl/milbemax combination reduces the number of products, you don't get doubling up and it is easy for owners to understand. Activyl for creepy crawlies, Milbemax for wiggles.

Thankyou Lonecat.
