Itchy ears....how much scratching is normal?

Got a dog with huge bat like ears.

He's always been fairly scratchy at them. More so than our last dog. Its not constant at all, in fact he can go a few days where I don't see any scratching but then he will spend five minutes with his foot practically down his ear.

They don't look sore apart from once he scratched so much he made his ear bleed. I got some drops which said they soothed itchy ears, killed mites, sorted out wax and he seemed better after this. He seems worse again. I've managed to put drops down one ear but he hates it and I can't get near him for the other ear.

My mum reckons her dogs groomer pulls the hair out the inside of her dogs ears. She reckons I need to do this. Hmm

He is due boosters next month so I will mention it to the vet.

Our late westie suffered terribly with his ears because they never came up. I'd wait until he was settled on my knee at night and grab the tweezers and pluck the hairs inside while he lay there, think he actually enjoyed it tbh. Groomers do pull hair out, or at least mine always did.

I used to rinse his ears with white vinegar/water solution as well and clean them out with a little cotton wool.
Get the vet to check for ear mites when you go, over the counter stuff isn't always strong enough to sort them.

If he's got a lot of hair growing from deep inside it is better to get it out so the air can circulate.
Get the vet to check for mites but it could just as easily be an allergy. One of mine has food allergies &, if he's had something that sets it off, ear scratching is the first sign he gives of it.

This stuff is good for keeping on top of ear problems or any other itch problems for that matter. You can buy it from several of the online vet supply sites or Amazon as well as their own site so it's worth googling prices.

Aquelven, I hadn't thought of allergy, but you have reminded me that Bob had infinitely more issues with his ears when he was fed on Bakers than when we moved to Arden Grange.

I'm trying to get our new pup used to having his ears plucked now, I think Bob used to find it relaxing Blush
