Normally not a problem, as he does when out a walk off lead, or in out back garden. But we on holiday in Scotland and have rented an apartment, pooch take lots of long walks, nothing off lead as wasn't sure of surroundings, and he hasn't done anything since this morning when we lefty Mums!!

Cue us going to bed to find he had "gone" on our bed!! Despite being take out several times once about ten minutes before!!

Help!! What do I do!?

Lots of dogs like to go out of the way i.e long grass, under a bush, so will go off lead, but not on lead.

If he's a rescue it's possible his previous owner/foster has trained him to only go in his own garden/on command.

Re training is easy enough, it just takes time and patience. Pop a lead on him every time he might want to go (after eating, after waking, after drinking lots, if you spot him sniffing and circling) as soon as he performs, praise and treat. In the meantime limit unsupervised access to the house to just one room. Never punish for accidents, you will just cause him to hide it and go when you are not looking. Just quietly clean it up.

how old is he?

my year old hates the bad weather and slinks upstairs to wee, got to catch her before she makes a dash for it.

When he's in the garden you teach him a command that means 'do a pee' or whatever - and when you think he's going in the garden you go out with him, give him the command until he performs and then tell him what a good dog he is. Similarly on walks - if you spot him starting, again command word and lots of praise. Mind you, mine went from 5pm to 9am holding on the other day because it was all 'strange' as we were in an hotel - no accidents though.

Thank you everyone!

This morning dh took him out and founds some grass, he peed for about a minute (poor love), and has a massive poo ( sorry but was really pleased for him!!)

Lots if rewards and praise? You should've seen his face when he came back in! ??Grin

apparently going on your bed is territorial, and he is only a baby.

mistlethrush · 24/12/2013 09:52

In this case I would think that going on the bed was 'safe' and 'an emergency' given his age and the fact that he's not learned that you can do things out on a walk! Continue with high praise and lots of opportunities with grass!
