You can put wax on a dog's paws? How does that work?

Elsewhere on mumsnet I read that you can put wax on a dog's paw pads,to protect them from cold ground. How does that work? Thanks.

What sort of wax? Confused beeswax? Surely not candel wax as that would have to be hot to be workable enough to apply.

Surely dogs' paws are made to protect themselves from the cold. Never heard of waxing their paws. Wouldn't it make them slide about?:)

Here It's mainly for sporting or working dogs though, you won't need any for a stroll around the park.

Paw Wax is outstanding for homes with wooden floors. My old man westie had arthritis and paw wax helped him no end to grip the floor.
Alfie pup doesn't seem to be having an issue at present but I'll probably give it a go if he does.

It does claim to protect paws from salt etc on pavements.

we started using mushers when our lab pup started sliding about on the hard floors a bit more than usual (and getting frightened by them). We thought it might be because his pads became hard/very dry with the constant wet weather. Has helped a bit.

Its just like a hard Vaseline in texture and you only need a tiny bit each day, we rub it in each night when watching tv. Pup enjoys his wee foot rub.

Ooh! Just ordered some for my older lurcher. We have wooden floors and the steps into the front door and back door can be slippery too, hope it helps. Another bit of Mumsnet education. Smile
