Lost dog - Monmouthshire/Herefordshire/Gloucs/Worcs area

Regular MNer but NCed for this to preserve anonymity!

A local friend is dogsitting for her friends dog (a lovely little black whippet) while they are abroad for Christmas. She managed to escape out of their catflap on Tuesday at dusk and ran off before they could catch her.

They spent ages looking but as they live on the edge of a large wood on one side, farmland on the other, and over a mile to the nearest proper road, it was hard to know where to start. They have now heard that she was spotted running along the road towards Monmouth shortly after escaping. They've rung every dog warden and vet for miles around but no joy Sad

She may have tried to find her way home - she lives in Worcestershire.

Description is that she is a smallish black whippet, with a leather collar but no tag or chip. She's quite an old lady and has grey flecks round her muzzle.

So anyone in any of the surrounding areas, please keep your eyes and ears open for news and PM me if you have any leads.

Thank you MNers Flowers

Hi, so sorry to hear this. I'm not in the right area, so can't do much, but can offer the following advice:

Do you know if they've registered her on DogLost yet? It's the best way to get the dog community looking for her and is very well supported.

Another good one is LurcherSearch - it's not just for Lurchers, but is managed by a sighthound charity which will help, as if she's picked up and ends up in rescue it would help if she's already on the sighthound charities' radar.

I hope she's found safe and well really soon.

Just been told about the Alfies Lost Dogs website as well. Somewhere else to get her listed and alert more people.

LostWhippet · 19/12/2013 19:12

She's on Dog Lost already. Will look at others, 5 hanks x

Don't just ring the vets and dog wardens. Go in and take a picture in to leave with them. Your small, black whippet could be their large, black italian greyhound or small lab x.

My chipped dog ran off from the dogsitters when I was away. I phoned up about the white JRT/Fox terrier X, they had him down as a white and brown Westie/JRT X. He was only positively identified when I mentioned he'd most likely be growling and snarling at pretty much everything Hmm

Also get a pic circilating on FB. I have some friends with rescue contacts in that area, if you get him on FB, pm me and I'll share it.

Good luck.

I'm not sure my friend has a photo as she was only dog sitting not the owner. The owners are out of the country for another 4 weeks... but I take yr point and will suggest she tries to get one asap.

If they get a pic I will pass it on to you if that's okay?

Does the owner not have any up on FB your friend could download and print?

LostWhippet · 19/12/2013 19:50

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm not sure but will ask. Not sure if owners are even on FB...

Yes, that's fine. I'm not in your area, but will get my friends who are to pass it around local and sighthound rescue centers.

I also run a FB page for a sighthound rescue, so will put it on there for you.

I'd def share with Evesham Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue - they have a lot of supporters in that area, and their founder is also a Dog Warden with masses of experience.

So Sad at dog not having chip or tag - will make it much harder if unscrupulous people pick up.

Also share with Scruples Whippet Rescue.

And keep at it with the dog wardens, and directly with the kennels who act as pounds - Communication is notoriously poor between them, especially at this time of the year. From tomorrow, many dog wardens will be on holiday until well into the new year.

It's also worth contacting vets in the area.
