Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I’m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don’t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Phew, glad it's not just me. I did try to link to it via Google, as well as my own bookmark.

Well, all was quiet for an hour, then Pip started whinging a bit. That's really good compared to him having his green feeder and a kong in his crate. That generally lasted 40 minutes - 50 at a push if I left a small kong along with his big one and made sure they were both frozen. No growling either, so it seems we have no worries there.

I am going to invest in one of the web cams someone linked to on another thread here, so I can see what they're up to. Hoping it might mean I can go out for a while, keep an eye on them and get back before Pip exceeds his coping time. You can link it to your pc or smartphone and use either one to pan the camera left/right/up and down to watch the dogs. It also has 2 way audio, so you can check if they're making a racket - and tell them to be quiet if they are. Pip responds to both 'quiet' and 'settle' when said from the living room while he's in the kitchen, so it has a slim chance of working at least. If nothing else Mum and I can pop to the local garden centre cafe for the occasional treat (and to save my sanity) and I might be able to relax enough to actually enjoy what I'm eating! Grin

He really is doing so much better though. These days I can even have a nice long bath without him crying and wailing the whole time. He still whines when I go upstairs without him, but I think that's mainly because he became conditioned to doing it when he was younger. Whining I can cope with, wailing and yelling I can't. I'm hoping it will gradually fade as he matures, as it's so much better already.

Knock knock.

Is there room for a teeny 8 week Whippy girl?

moosemama · 23/01/2014 17:00

Oh definitely - especially if there's some lovely pictures to coo over! WinkGrin

monkeyfacegrace · 23/01/2014 17:04

I collect her tomorrow morning, it feels like Christmas eve Blush

moosemama · 23/01/2014 17:09

Oh how exciting. Grin

I was beside myself with excitement the day before we picked up Pip, so I totally understand how you're feeling.

Have you picked a name for her yet or are you waiting to see what suits her?

moosemama · 23/01/2014 17:13

Scratch that last question. I've just noticed your other thread!

moosemama · 23/01/2014 17:14

Have put a couple of name suggestions on there for you. Smile

mistlethrush · 23/01/2014 17:14

I issued an invitation when I saw the naming thread!!!

(And there's a touch of lurcher in there too by the sound of it).

BTW, welcome to a whole new shopping experience... Some of the collars are simply wonderful!

moosemama · 23/01/2014 17:18

Oo yes, collars, coats, pjs if she's smooth coated. There's a whole world of gorgeous sighthound accessories out there just waiting for you to discover and become hopelessly addicted to spending money you don't have on them.

monkeyfacegrace · 23/01/2014 17:22

I havent got a pot to piss in right now! Its end of a loooong month, I can scrape enough together to buy her, then its spending freeze for a week!

Now, tell me about these pj's...

mistlethrush · 23/01/2014 17:24

Monkey - Lurcher link (when their site is fixed - not sure what the problem is) have a bit of a puppy coat loan I think (not sure as we got ours fully grown).

Re housetraining - don't know if you've done this before, but don't be beguiled by puppy pads - start as you mean to go on and have regular trips into the garden and lots of praise when she does something out there!

moosemama · 23/01/2014 17:48

Are you going to get her insured? If money is tight it can seem like a stretch, but I have learned the hard way that's just not worth the alternative. I cancelled my dogs' insurance policies when times were tough, because the premiums had reached ridiculous prices with two dogs over the age of 10. Then I ended up with vet bills of over £4,500 last year - excluding regular treatments like vaccinations, worming and flea treatment. Needless to say, both mine are now fully insured.

If you have a look at the links in the op of this thread you'll start to get a good idea of what lovely shopping opportunities you will have in store when you're feeling a bit more flush. It's not really worth shelling out much when they're tiny, as they grow so quickly and you keep having to upsize. We bought Pip a jumper that was a couple of sizes too big off Ebay when he was small. It didn't cost much and lasted him a couple of months. You can also fashion your own little coats from old fleeces and blankets while she's growing. Google no-sew dog coats and there are lots of websites that show you how to do it.

I also highly recommend joining Lurcher Link. It's a brilliant forum with such an amazing wealth of Lurcher and general sighthound knowledge and experience and the people are really lovely. As Mistle said, the website is down at the moment for some unknown reason, but hopefully they'll get it back up and running soon.

monkeyfacegrace · 23/01/2014 17:57

Oh its only a temp cash flow blip due to DHs ill health over Nov/Dec, meaning less income during Jan.

Things will be much easier from Feb onwards, and yes, she will be insured.

I did have three dogs, but lost two in Dec, so Im no stranger to dog costs.

Argh, Im never going to sleep tonight.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/01/2014 18:16

Hi monkeyfacegrace, how exciting!

cinnamongreyhound · 23/01/2014 18:16

And sorry for your loss in December, it's so difficult :(

monkeyfacegrace · 23/01/2014 18:44

Worst thing is cinnamon, the one was only meant to be fostered out whilst myself and my husband had lengthy hospital stays (cancer and miscarriage), but the foster family have grown so attached, and tbf are giving her an incredible life, and arent happy that I want her back Sad

The other was 14 and PTS due to dementia and various other bits.

I feel like a disgusting human for giving up on the one Pug and not fighting harder Sad

cinnamongreyhound · 23/01/2014 20:53

Don't feel like that! I did the opposite, my greyhound was a bit slow on her morning walk and then had wee'd in her bed when I was on afternoon school run. We took her to the vet in the evening who said she would support us if we decided her being pts was best but also offered admitting her with a drip or antibiotics and anti inflammatories, with a fan on her at home. By bedtime she couldn't get up and I had to take her to ooh vet and see was pts very soon before she would have left me anyway. Wish I hadn't put her through those last 6 hours of pain :(
Sounds like you've had a tough time anyway and if the one is having a lovely life then you are doing the right thing, perhaps you can meet up for regular walks when your pup is old enough?

bakingtins · 25/01/2014 21:13

We went to see Gloria today, and she was absolutely lovely, very gentle with my boys, took her for a little walk and she's pretty good on a lead, very friendly, nice waggy smacks you like a whip tail. But she is huge probably only weighs 25-30kg but is all legs and enormously long. It didn't faze my 3 yr old at all even though she's about the same height as him, she made no attempt to jump up or be overly licky. She has no basic training and probably isn't housetrained but I think with her temperament she'd reward the work you put in on that front.
We have a Ford S-max which is a massive car but I'm still worried about fitting her in. Our previous dog had a crate which took up half the boot, which allowed us to also take kids bikes/pushchair etc.
What do other large lurcher/greyhound owners do in the car?
Also wondering how socially acceptable it is to turn up at Grandma's house etc with a massive (if gentle) hound?
Any advice?

mistlethrush · 25/01/2014 21:41

Legs fold up remarkably well.. My lurcher isn't that tall but she can occupy the entire 3 seat sofa - but she can curl up quite happily in just one seat width as well. When we're going any distance, ours has her car harness on and curls up on the back seat next to DS very happily. She will stay there with absolutely no problem for 3 hrs or so. She will go into the boot too - we don't have a crate or boot bars - but she will settle down there - I would prefer to tether her for her own safety though if going any real distance. On short journeys she sits in the foot well of the front passenger seat with no problem.

cinnamongreyhound · 26/01/2014 14:38

So I recognise you from a running thread bakingtins? We have a Picasso and for our greyhound and whippet x in it no probs, I think 2 greys would fit fine. They do have the ability to squeeze up small!

We take both of ours when visiting, with prior notice of course!

I took Lola out for a run this morning, too far for peanut so he went to work with dh in the car. He went in with him and pee'd up 4 different things but was apparently so excited by everything he was hilarious! Lola managed a 30 min drive without being sick with a tablet but was sick on the way home :(

bakingtins · 26/01/2014 14:47

Yes - I did C25K over the summer, but I'm afraid it has fallen by the wayside as I'm pregnant after 4MC and on doctor's orders not to do anything strenous. Planning to get back to it though, maybe with a canine companion? I quite fancy a go at canicross.

PeanutPatty · 26/01/2014 15:41

Is that Gloria from BGP? She's lovely looking and we liked her but we've small children and discounted her as they said children aged 10 as a min.

Cani-X sounds fun. MrPP is keen on having a go.

So we are in the process of arranging a homecheck. Fingers, toes, paws and everything else crossable crossed that we pass.

bakingtins · 26/01/2014 17:21

no, she's at GRSB. Must be a popular name!

cinnamongreyhound · 26/01/2014 17:34

Definitely! Running with dogs is great, I got harnesses and lines for mine and a belt for me from my mum for my birthday :) congratulations on the pregnancy x

Good luck peanutpatty!

cinnamongreyhound · 27/01/2014 23:00

Just seen on fb Charlie boy from EGLR has been returned :( I looked at him when we were getting Lola but he was ? Over cats. He needs a livelier home with another dog and not left more than 4hrs, made me :( seeing that.
