Bollocks advice ????

Hey,
I have a 4month old puppy, he seems very at home with us and his training is going really well (i expected him to be more trouble)
His problem is one of his balls hasn't dropped. The vets say if its not appeared by 6months they will have to go in and get it out so it doesn't turn cancerous.
Of course Im all up for that if it prevents him getting cancer but to be honest DH was hoping to breed from him. what i wanted to know is if they can go in and hook the one inside him out? Do they have to have them both off? and would it cost us more to do that??
sorry for the daft bollock question but if anyones puppy has had this id really Like to hear what happened. This is my first puppy and Im very daft about him so sorry if i sound like a prat!
Thanks
GMGB

Retained testicle is an inherited condition and in certain breeds can be linked to other conditions such as portosystemic shunts. It is strongly advised not to breed from dogs with a retained testicle for these reasons.

I would be very weary of breeding in the first place. Why does your DH want to breed from him? Does the pup have amazing breeding himself? At 4mo you won't really know the dog's temperament or conformation really so you'd need to wait a bit before you could even decide that this was the right dog to breed from. What is your DH's breeding programme? Is he committed to keeping the puppies if he can't find homes for them or taking back any adult dogs that get returned?

And the retained testicle is normally a reason for never breeding from a dog so I think that alone would put an end to it.

right. i just wondered if it could be corrected but obviously not.
thank you for your replies

You should never breed from a dog with a retained testicle.
Likewise a cryptorchid dog can't be shown so can't be proven hence shouldn't be bred from.
To be honest breeding any dog should not be taken lightly, there are too many unwanted pups being dumped left right and centre.

The op itself is pretty straightforward, the testicle is removed and then it is pretty much a case of looking for and removing the second. Depending on where it is there can be more bruising and swelling and a longer healing time than a standard castration and it will cost more due to the possibility of two wounds and the length of time spent looking for the missing one!!

I would strongly recommend castration either way even descended testicles can cause tumours and prostate cancers as well as testosterone fuelled behaviour problems.

Good luck with your pup, it sounds like he is fitting in well!!

thanks greyhorse, i wanted to get Im castrated anyway so Im happy for it to be done. its a shame it may take longer to heal but its obviously for the best. He seems to have a fairly good temperament but it won't do him any harm to calm his mad half hours down hehe
