How to introduce kitten to cat hating terrier...

PoisonedApple · 11/12/2013 23:03

My cross breed terrier (size of a jack russell) was cornered by a cat when she was a puppy and was terrified of cats for years. Now however she seems to have discovered the joy of chasing them. We are getting a kitten early next year and I was wondering if any of you had any tips on how to introduce them so that they have along and happy friendship?!

If you know your dog is stressed by cats/wants to chase them why subject her (and the kitten) to the trauma?

Pointeshoes · 12/12/2013 08:13

Don't get a kitten

hippopootamus · 12/12/2013 12:59

Agree with the responses above. Why get a kitten?

MissBattleaxe · 12/12/2013 13:01

Are you mad? The dog will be traumatised and the kitten will end up injured or terrified.

moogalicious · 12/12/2013 13:09

I wouldn't.

lljkk · 12/12/2013 13:31

Are there compelling reasons why you need to take this kitten?

Whoknowswhocares · 12/12/2013 13:33

The chances of a dog whose is both scared of cats and has an in-ground use of its prey drive established not either hurting the poor kitten or being stressed to the point of serious behavioural issues are remote.
There is no way this is anything but selfish and stupid

HorizontalRunningOnly · 12/12/2013 13:34

If the terror now chases kittens or cats there is a very real chance of u having a dead kitten. Why are u getting it if u know the dog is scared or stressed by them?

HorizontalRunningOnly · 12/12/2013 13:34

Terrier not terror!

chemenger · 12/12/2013 13:40

Don't get a kitten, there is a good chance your dog will kill it.

Lilcamper · 12/12/2013 14:04

Terriers were bred by us to go underground, catch small furry things and literally shake them to death, kittens are small furry things.....Hmm

SconeForAStroll · 12/12/2013 14:08

I am holding off from getting a cat because my Labradors don't like them and will chase them. These are the same dogs who stroll around the garden ignoring the guinea pigs and give way to the chickens when they come in the house.

Just not worth the risk.

As lovely an idea as it is, it really isn't worth attempting I don't think.

Floralnomad · 12/12/2013 14:09

I agree with everyone else ,why get the kitten ? I have a cat hunting terrier and I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that he would kill a cat given half the chance .

BananaNotPeelingWell · 12/12/2013 14:10

Please dont get the kittenSad

thoughtsbecomethings · 12/12/2013 14:11

I have a little snappy jack Russell and 2 kittens was a bit tense to start with but now they are all the best of friends. The only thing I have to watch is feeding time as doggy likes his own space when he eats.

D0oinMeCleanin · 12/12/2013 14:18

I've successfully trained a terrier not to go after his cat (other cats are still on the menu, unfortunately). It took a lot of time and effort and tears and there was some close calls. This was a dog savvy adult cat, not an inquisitive kitten.

I agree with others, unless it's your home vs a death sentence, don't get a kitten.

Grin @ terrier not terror - you were right the first time Wink

D0oinMeCleanin · 12/12/2013 14:25

I still don't leave them alone, unsupervised. You never know when instinct will take over and you will end up with a dead cat.

Although dd2 let the cat onto the stairs last night and didn't tell me. I didn't know until I got out of bed to check on what was upsetting Devil Dog. The cat had stole his bed and he didn't dare go near it Grin

The cat did some training of his own, laying in wait on a wardrobe or cupboard and then dive bombing the dog and running back up a height while the dog was still wondering wft was going on.

ButThereAgain · 12/12/2013 14:26

I've got a terrier and I definitely wouldn't get a kitten. Even if you did manage to train the dog to be in the cat's presence without bloodshed you could never, ever be sure that you wouldn't come into a room one day and find a dead cat. There are stories of terrier and cat doing ok together for years and then one day play oversteps its usual barriers and slips into killing for real.

HorizontalRunningOnly · 12/12/2013 15:06

Haha yes terror is about right, just doesn't seem worth it especially a fragile kitten with a dog who already has history of cat issues!

PoisonedApple · 12/12/2013 18:34

Hmm. Am questioning the wisdom of this now... Was assuming cat would eventually take pole position and dog would surrender to its superior powers.

Lilcamper · 12/12/2013 18:38

A cat? Maybe. A kitten? Prey that must be chased and killed. Not worth the risk.

Clobbered · 12/12/2013 18:42

Getting a kitten is a really really bad idea. Just don't do it. What Whoknowswhocares said.

MissBeehiving · 13/12/2013 20:59

I have a terrier that lives with my cats but he came into the household as a puppy so has been trained by them to leave them alone. They also have "safe areas" to get to where he can't get them. Even so, there is no way I would bring a kitten into the mix. Once you have seen a terrier kill a rat you realise that anything that moves fast stimulates their prey drive and two shakes and a crunch later that kitten would be dead.

LEMisafucker · 13/12/2013 21:17

No, do not get a kitten - I used to have a rotweiller, with two cats and two rabbits, they all used to play in the garden together, if the rottie saw a cat out of the house he would chase it but he wouldnt do anything.

I now have two terriers, I have no illusions that they would do anything other than tear a cat to shreds, its just not worth the risk.

Sorry but you really need to rethink this.

noddingoff · 15/12/2013 00:30

What everyone else said. Terriers have been bred for centuries to rag small creatures to death and yours has shown some tendency to follow its instinct. It might be OK, but why risk it?
