Bed or crate for rescue dog?

We are collecting our 10 month old rescue pup at the weekend and I'm hoping for some advice about whether to get a crate or not.
Our house is very open plan, kitchen, dining and living room all open so perhaps not the ideal layout with a dog . I was thinking of getting one of those fabric crates that could be used as the dogs 'den' where she can escape the kids but would it also be ok to put her in the crate when we are eating or if nervous children come to play or is this the wrong way to use a crate? Or would we be better off with a stair gate so she could be shut in the corridor with a normal dog bed? But this would put her in the way of the front door. She is house trained so doesn't need a crate for that reason and sleeps on sofa at foster home.
Thanks for your help

You would have to ask the fosterer or the rescue if she's been crate tested, we were told not to get our rescue dog a crate as she freaked out when in a small place. You are right about her possibly needing a place to escape, ours just takes herself off to her bed if she wants peace.

It depends on the dog and your needs really.

Mine is crated because I've had him from a baby puppy and I liked to know he was contained when I'm not there, he's still in it at 18 months because he won't stop chewing, almost literally won't stop, lol...so a fabric one would be useless.

A crate is easier I think with young children than a bed - harder to get to and easier to enforce leaving the dog alone.

There's no reason at all not to stick him in there with a chew if you have visitors that you want to keep him separate from...but a stairgate would do the same job really.

Unless your dog has a reason (like ClaimedByMe's) not to use a crate - it's really whatever you prefer.

WE've found a dog crate invaluable for our rescue pup (now 7 months) but she was already used to one when we got her. Shutting her in it seems to settle her down when she gets to that toddler, mad "overtired" stage when she can't seem to settle herself and as she's nervous it give her her own space.

We use a crate (and I hated the thought of one), and cmotdog loves it. Actually right now, he could be on the sofa, on a comfy chair, or on the bed by the window, but is laid in his crate with the door open. He def takes his best treasures there, and treats it as a safe haven.

I have a crate for my young girl too
I also had never used one before and hated the idea
However
It has been a godsend and she loves it
My words I have eaten

Thanks everyone, I have ordered her a crate and will see how she gets on with it
