Does the nasty rubber smell wear off?

Yes, I shove ours in the dishwasher and they don't smell at all apart from the one we lost under the sofa for a couple of months, that one went straight in the bin as it was past gross

Bugger - I haven't got a dishwasher.

Just soak it in hot water and washing up liquid to clean it - the smell will wear off pretty quickly.

Thanks! I wouldn't want to eat out of it at the moment, it must be worse for a dog.

I drop all my dogs' kongs into a bucketful of milton steriliser (I use the tablets and drop a couple of in with around 6-8 kongs) once a week. Their colour has faded, but at least they don't honk! Grin

The new-kong rubber smell will fade very quickly once it's been washed and stuffed with something equally stinky.

Thanks, moosemama! I'm trying milton at the moment.

Hi slightly off topic but be careful using Kong's

I recently used one the black extreme and had large chunks come off big enough to choke on (they had it for maybe 30mins tops brand new) and when i contacted the company they said that was normal and you should never leave your pet unsupervised with them

They are handy and great boredom breakers but check it often for damage and replace often as well

Personally i will never have another in the house, maybe i just had bad luck but i will not risk my boys x

That sounds very odd. I've been using Kongs since they first came out. Used black ones with my old boy and red with all my others and have never had pieces break off any of them. I'd be a little suspicious they were covering up for a faulty batch.

Both my boys have kongs when we go out, as they were introduced as part of a separation anxiety programme. We have lots of them, as I like to freeze them in batches and they get one each every school run. None of them has so much as a tooth mark on them. Mind you, neither of my dogs are power chewers. They're large in size, but being Lurchers, prefer to expend as little energy as possible on extricating the contents.

I do remember we bought a sort of throw/pull ball toy thing that was made by Kong, back in the 90s. It was supposed to be indestructible, but only took my Boxer x GSD boy about 20 minutes to sever all it's joints. That was made of much spongier rubber though and they don't sell them anymore.

thezoo · 11/12/2013 08:41

My GSD somehow managed to chew a hole in the center of a flat concrete wall
thankfully the giant mutant lab has never touched anything but his toys but both have a lot of power

Hopefully it was just a faulty batch/individual toy but as with most people when something similar happens my trust in the manufacturing company has gone :)

I can totally understand that. I would probably feel the same if it happened to one of mine. I bought some supposedly safe chews for my dogs once and the darn things shattered. Lots of people swear by them, but I'll never buy them again.

My Boxer x GSD could chew through almost anything as well. I think GSD's have the tenacity to keep at it, even if it's a massive challenge and that coupled with big teeth and a powerful jaw is bound to mean they are capable of impressive destruction.

I spent some time Googling Kongs yesterday. There was a spate of reports of problems and incidents between 2008 and 2010, but doesn't seem to be much since. Don't know if perhaps that means they've changed their designs.

I just bought lots of different toys including konkongs gs for our new puppy. Every single one says do not let dogs play withwith them unsupervised. I assumed it was a legal thing as I thought they needed toys when you leave them alone.
