What is this smell the dog is making? Gross post....

She's my brother's. An 18 month old un-neutered female greyhound. He's in hospital and I'm not familiar with dogs....she's doing fine here though and is currently eating a bone on the deck.

However...she's been bleeding for about 7 days now...on and off...I assume this is hr in heat?

She smells quite bad...not just dog smell....but a kind of pooey smell but worse somehow. Not all the time...just sometimes...I just left the sitting room a moment ago, came in and the STINK was gag-worthy.

I looked on the sofa (covered in towels) and there was a wet patch...could have been brownish....it smelled very bad so I changed the towels.

Is this normal for a dog in heat or has she got a blocked gland or something?

She's pooing, weeing and eating well. Also...she was still a bit leaky (blood) this morning and i dont know when it's safe to take her out to the field?

I WILL be making my brother get her spayed or whatever you call it when he's better. Hmm

My dog had this and it ended up being Pyometra which is an infection of the uterus, she had to have an emergency operation. It can easily be mistaken for an on going season.

The only symptom my dog had was the smell, but the vet said it was a good job we rang because they can go down hill rapidly and she wouldn't have made it through the weekend.
If I were you I would ring the vets and get their out of hours number . I hope that helps.

ICameOnTheJitney · 07/12/2013 17:49

I read something about that but thought that because she seems well, then there would be no risk. Sad I'd better get her checked....does anyone know...will the vet expect me to pay on the day the dog is seen? I am very short of money and my brother is not well enough to worry about the dog....she's literally his life and I don't want him to know she's getting checked as he needs no stress at the moment....I could pay next week but not today or tomorrow.

A weekend appt is likely to be £100 for a consultation, extra if extra tests are done. Can you google vets in your area and see.

Are you sure its not her teeth? Greys can have awful teeth and the smell is terrible.

ICameOnTheJitney · 07/12/2013 17:54

That's extortionate! How awful!

And yes, they normally want paying the same day. Is the dog insured?

ICameOnTheJitney · 07/12/2013 17:55

I don't think so.

When is a dog safe to go off the lead when coming off heat?

www.vets-now.com/find-an-emergency-vet/

Free, out of hours advice. Warni g though, if they have a clinic near you they might say dog needs checking over because they want your money.....I'm a bit cynical like that.

KringleCandleLover · 07/12/2013 17:57

Could be anal glands?

The smell is digusting and the glands can leak a browny liquid.

It smells kind of fishy-bloody-metal like..

Doesn't really affect the dog other than sometimes dragging their bum on the floor.

One of my dogs smells iffy when she's had a poo and another releases her glands around the house. They have to have their anals cleared regularly by the groomer to take the edge off it.

dadditlass · 07/12/2013 17:58

Our vet lets you pay when all the treatment is finished. They also have payment plans so you can pay bit by bit. If you explain when you phone up they should be able to tell you an approximate price. It's a couple of years ago since my dog had it done but I think it was about £160 altogether. That was over Christmas and new year so out of normal hours.

KringleCandleLover · 07/12/2013 18:00

If it is a season and she has been bleeding for 7 days, she could be entering her most fertile time.

My lady is usually ready for mating between d10-12 though it varies bitch to bitch.

I wouldn't let her off lead just in case.

KieranTheFlutterbug · 07/12/2013 18:01

My dog used to leave little brown stinky wet patches wherever she sat. It was her anal glands.

ICameOnTheJitney · 07/12/2013 18:05

Gosh and darn it! She'd love a run but I daren't then....she's licking her parts a lot. Is that just the season thing do you think?

I would phone the vets and explain, they usually have records of who the owner is and if you can't pay all of it they can leave a charge on the account which your brother or you can settle later.

If you look around the house he should have her vet records somewhere which will tell you which practice she's registered with - he might even have insurance which would cover the cost.

daisydotandgertie · 07/12/2013 18:08

Can you take her temperature? It needs to be taken anally but it is easy. If she has a pyo, she will have a temp.

I'd be doing that before I had to spend £££ on an emergency vet, even if it meant binning the thermometer afterwards.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 07/12/2013 18:08

From what I remember about dogs in heat though they do tend to leak blood so your towels are wise!

daisydotandgertie · 07/12/2013 18:09

It sounds more likely to be anal glands which are vile, but far from an emergency.

Her season is still underway. You need to leave 28 days from the first day of bleeding before she is allowed out and about to be absolutely safe.

daisydotandgertie · 07/12/2013 18:10

And yes, the licking is her way of keeping clean during her season.

LEMisafucker · 07/12/2013 18:16

I really REALLY think that dog needs to be seen by a vet - it COULD be anal glands but if its Pyometra and you leave her over the weekend, she could end up with sceptacemia and she will die. If the dog is insured then this will be covered. I know money is an issue but they will be willing to wait rather than let the dog die, which she will do if she has a pyo and it is left.

KringleCandleLover · 07/12/2013 18:19

Would a Pyometra occur so early in a season though?

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 07/12/2013 18:24

LEM is right about the money - if it is urgent but you don't have money no vet would turn you away, they would negotiate a payment plan.

I don't know about dogs so I really can't advise on potential issues, but if it was me, I'd want her checked out since she's so important to your brother and he is ill. I think I'd rather risk it being nothing than have the situation of him coming out of hospital to the devastating news that his beloved dog has had to be put to sleep :(

Scuttlebutter · 08/12/2013 01:42

Another one here who would say that this bitch urgently needs to see the vet. I really would not take chances with an unneutered bitch. Pyo is a killer if untreated.

If your brother got her from a sighthound rescue , it may be worth contacting them to see if they are willing to help, though it would be highly unusual for them to home an unspayed bitch.

If your brother is unable or unwilling to cover vet fees/spaying costs, then please, please consider talking to him about doing the responsible thing and considering having her rehomed by a sighthound charity. As a young bitch she could easily be rehomed - the charity would take care of neutering and as part of the homecheck would insist any adopter understood and could cope with the financial aspects of dog ownership. They also offer lifetime backup so in case of future ill health they can provide emergency foster care for instance.
